The Salish Sea: Jewel Of The Pacific Northwest
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

Fashioned by the violent volcanism of the Pacific Rim of Fire, plate tectonics, and the sculptural magic wrought by Ice Age glaciers, the Salish Sea straddles the western border between Canada and the United States and is connected to the Pacific Ocean primarily through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This fascinating visual journey through the Salish Sea combines a scientist’s inquiring mind, beautiful photographs, and a lively narrative of fascinating stories, all of which impart a sense of connection with this intricate marine ecosystem and the life that it sustains.

Although principally about the natural history and conservation of the Salish Sea (the ocean and adjoining lands of northern Washington and southern British Columbia), the photos and text make for a fascinating whole with relevancy far beyond the Pacific Northwest. The Salish Sea explores the zoology, botany, past and present geology, anthropology, and economy of the region in photos and text while emphasizing an ecosystem approach that recognizes the interdependency of all.The writing is at once both lyrical and information rich. The science is readable but not dumbed down, achieving the authors’ goal of getting it right while expressing the beauty of the place. The photographs are just plain breath-taking, the “wow-factor” experienced with the turn of just about every page. This successful exploration of biodiversity, geodiversity, and sustainability makes The Salish Sea an enjoyable, informative, and passionate read for any nature enthusiast and a must-have for anyone living in or visiting the Pacific Northwest.

Having lived next to Puget Sound on Camano Island, this book satisfies my curiosities with beautiful illustrations and much information that are both historical and current. It has National Geographic quality and is a nice size. Highly Recommend.

It is a beautiful books filled with terrific photos. I wish I knew people to give it to- it is so full of photos and information. I have shared it with my family , who have sailed mush of the Salish Sea and they loved it.

This is more than just a beautiful book, though it is that. This is more than just an extremely informative book about my region, though it is that. It is a comprehensive look at the inter-connectedness of sea, land, wildlife, human population, industry, etc., etc., in an engaging format. It establishes the name of the waters we live in here which was first suggested in 1989 the book informs me. I love this book. I bought 4 or 5 for gifts after perusing a friend's copy. It's the best $25 (or sometimes less on ) anyone could spend to understand where we live. And maybe it will help us save the Salish Sea before we ruin it.

This book is a stunning reminder of the beauty of the natural world – and also of its diversity, its fragility, its importance and its resilience. While focused on the Pacific Northwest, it is a tale for all places, a story of the connections among all things that weaves the region’s geology, natural history, marine biology and human activity into coherent whole. Beautiful to thumb through, surreptitiously powerful to read!

The stunning images initially attracts the attention and then the beautiful writing of Audrey Benedict keeps one mesmerized and engaged with pages and pages of information and science explaind so eloquently. It is a must have book

I can only echo many reviewers that this book is an exquisitely lovely read for anyone enchanted by our natural world. But a paperback which is considerably wider than it is tall is fraught with problems. Holding it in both hands is like holding up a noodle--one end or the middle is always wiggling out of control. If one places the book in the lap, it turns into a double humped camel with St. Vidus' Dance. If you spread it out on a table it requires paperweights or heavier books to keep the springy ends from taking flight. I supose a sturdy bookstand would work, but who has one of those now days?I must say however that these minor challenges in no way overshadow the pure joy of this beautiful book.

I've given this as gifts and my family loves it. Stunning pictures of beautiful wildlife. I will mail out another copy today.
