I would say that my rating is an average of 2 parts, depending on the nature and level of background of the prospective purchaser.For many divers and snorkelers, or just plain nature enthusiasts, I would give Dave Behrens's book four-and-a-half or even 5 stars, because it provides plenty of basic information about taxonomy, identification, feeding, reproduction, etc., in an attractive 'Humann-like' format with tons of outstanding photos. For someone interested in learning about opistobranchs (nudibranchs and other sea slugs) without a lot of scientific pretentiousness, the book is probably exactly what you're looking for. The information is arranged in a way that allows you to absorb the basics in manageable bites.On the other hand, if you're fairly familiar with the subject and are looking for a thorough scientific treatment (Behrens is an experienced and accomplished scientist in this field), you will probably be disappointed, and for this audience I would rate the book with only 3 or three-and-a-half stars. I was personally disappointed, because if I compare this book with, for example, "Reef Fish Behavior" from the same publisher, also written for a non-scientific audience, the fish book has a lot more text than the sea slug volume. Or if I compare this book with, for example, Hanlon's more scientific "Cephalopod Behavior", then I can see clearly that Behrens's book is not really aimed at the same audience. The question for this audience (presumedly the smaller part of the prospective audience), then, is whether the price is too high for a slim volume that although very attractively put together with excellent photographs, provides not much more insight than could be gained in a couple of hours of surfing sea slug sites on the internet. I enjoyed the book, but felt that it could have been more substantial.Note: I wrote this review when the book was selling on for full price. At the current price of $23 it's a terrific value and I highly recommend it.
I bought this because it was on my daughter's pinterest Christmas wish list. My 18 year old daughter is a science fanatic, she especially loves anything to do with sealife and these little creatures are her favorites. So, I expected her to like it, but I was surprised when it was her favorite thing she got!! She absolutely loved it!! She was so thrilled with it.
I purchased this book on the strength of the other reviews on the page and was very disappointed. The dialogue that accompanies the pictures is pretty bland and probably targeted at a 10 year old. I was expecting a bit more detail, but being told that Nudibranchs display bright colours to prevent them being eaten was a bit too weak. Most people who know anything about wildlife probably worked that out long ago. The pictures in the book are excellent and maybe worth the purchase alone, but since I take numerous underwater pictures they were only marginally interesting. If you have any book on underwater wildlife then you probably already have all the details. I have a few other books by Behrens so was expecting more. Did I mention the pictures are pretty good.Not worth the money. If you have been an underwater Naturalist for a while then it is probably a 1 star, if this is your very first time at trying to understand the underwater world then maybe a 3, however there are other better books out there. In fact a quick search of the web will bring up about 20 sites that have much better information on the life of a Nudibranch.
I have learned a lot by reading this book. I have learned to pay more attention to what the nudibranchs are doing having learned what the behaviour means. Who knew that such a seemingly lowly creature would have so much to teach us! I can't wait for my next dive trip to observe more nudi behaviour!
...or never knew you should know about nubibranchs. Great book. Well thought out. There's only one thing I would change. I would like to see common names associated with all the beautiful pictures of the nudis. This book is not for nudibranch id.
Emphatically YES and this is, by far, the best nudibranch book ever published. Almost all previous nudibranch books focus on identification rather than behavior. This book combines stunning photography (most by Constantinos Petrinos)with fascinating text by Dave Behrens on all forms of nudibranch behavior, most of it previously undescribed. This is a classic book and any marine life enthusiast should have it. These animals, as a group, are probably the most beautiful creatures in the ocean and finally someone has started documenting the way they live their lives.
I bought this book, but ended up not really reading it - it read more like a text book than a quick pick up and look at book (like some of the other reference books about fish).
