Originally published in 1995, soon after Death Valley National Park became the fifty-third park in the US park system, The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park was the first complete guidebook available for this spectacular area. Now in its third edition, this is still the only book that includes all aspects of the park. Much more than just a guidebook, it covers the park's cultural history, botany and zoology, hiking and biking opportunities, and more. Information is provided for all of Death Valley's visitors, from first-time travelers just learning about the area to those who are returning for in-depth explorations. The book includes updated point-to-point logs for every road within and around the park, as well as more accurate maps than those in any other publication. With extensive input from National Park Service resource management, law enforcement, and interpretive personnel, as well as a thorough bibliography for suggested reading, The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park, Third Edition is the most up-to-date, accurate, and comprehensive guide available for this national treasure.

Death Valley NP is an amazing park with so many variations in temperatures as well as scenery. Unfortunately, there are very few "good" travel guides on the market. Perhaps it's because it's one of our new national parks or perhaps it's because it's sandwiched between the more well known parks of the Grand Canyon and Sequoia/Yosemite, and is sort of the forgotten step-child.When looking for a book for a recent visit to the park, I came across this book which was (1) a book written fairly recently (I was surprised at how many were written more than ten years ago!) and (2) it covered not only the sites found within the park, but it also included some background history. Though it's a lot larger (page-wise) than most books I usually purchase for trips to our national parks, I took a chance. What I found was a book set up for road tripping through the park. What I mean is that it started you at one location and took you to the next point of interest and then to the next one and next one, etc. In order to make sense of the book, you had to follow step by step. This is a good idea in one sense, but you then have to cut the book in half. There's way too much information for this type of set up! Worse, instead of taking you to Badwater and giving you a large page or more filled with information, it would give you snippets as you were going along until you finally reached Badwater. Therefore, you had to follow exactly how he wanted you to tour the park. The book that I thought I'd be getting would have broken the park up into segments in which it gives you a general overview of that segment, some back ground information of the geography, etc and points of interest in each. For a book this size, it would have been far more helpful.
