I am in full agreement with Vince here. For only $13, this is an excellent, thorough introduction to the updated ACT.The reality of the test-prep publishing world these days is that name-brand companies like Barron's simply contract private tutors, such as me and Vince and Mr. Stewart, to write their books. Hence, the quality of the books is not just a reflection of the company's ability, but also a reflection of the author's expertise. Mr. Stewart seems to have been an excellent choice for Barron's in this instance.Of course, you should also buy the Real ACT Prep Guide The Real ACT Prep Guide (Book + Bonus Online Content), (Reprint) (Official Act Prep Guide) because it's the only source of Official ACT questions. However, the Real ACT Prep Guide (as you can tell from the many negative customer reviews) has not been updated to reflect the new ACT Writing (essay) portion, while this book from Barron's has in fact been updated to reflect the recent changes. So in that aspect, this book is even better than the real thing.I would not recommend paying the extra $7 for the CD-ROM; there is more than enough material in the book itself.For my personalized, frequently updated recommendations for ACT Prep, google "ACT Action Plan - McElroy Tutoring."
I'm an SAT / ACT tutor, but I often talk to people who plan to study on their own. Barron's ACT is a great choice for students as an overall guide to the ACT. It should be used in conjunction with real ACT practice tests, such as those in the Real ACT Prep Guide.My biggest reason for recommending this book is the quality of advice. As a tutor, I immediately can recognize that the book was written by an experienced tutor. As a result, the explanations are both robust and down-to-earth; they're written in a conversational, easy to follow tone. I agree with almost all of the advice in the book about how to strategically approach each section and question type.The practice question and test quality is very good, and will be a good supplement to real ACT tests. And this version of the book reflects the most recent changes to the ACT - the new essay format and dual Reading passages are well-covered, for example.If you're only buying one book to teach you how to take the ACT, this is a very good choice.
This is an excellent self-study guide for the updated ACT. There are enough practice tests to give you a good idea of what the actual test will be like. The advice from this book is well-written and easy to follow. There is no need to purchase the extra CD, as the content in this book is fairly comprehensive.
This book is great for prep on the ACT. My granddaughter has spent hours doing test then studying and then doing another test. I believe this book will be instrumental in her get the highest possible score for her on the ACT.
My daughter took the ACT before having used this book, and then a second time after having studied the Barron's book. She raised her score 5 points, and simultaneously boosted her confidence tremendously. It's one stop effective shopping. I would recommend the book to anyone looking to raise his/her ACT score.
