Visualize Your Vocabulary is a great way to "bolster" your vocabulary whether you're a student studying for the SAT, a parent trying to help them or really anyone who is seeking to improve their vocabulary. I like the layout of the book from the word choices, synonyms, memory word and pictures, which are not only creative and entertaining, but treasures for "visual" learners. The fact that the words are not in alphabetical order, makes the journey of reading it that much more rewarding because you're truly learning along the way. Thank you Shayne Gardner and Kris Hagen for your "finesse" with this book!
The fast paced world and logged schedules that our teen (and adults) live in jam pack our minds with information. Some of it is good and some of it invalid to our daily lives. This book is an ingenious way to isolate the words that are important to us and bring them to the fore when we need them. One of the many attributes this book had is that it's fun to use. Not only does it help us remember the definition to words it inspires our creativity ! I would highly recommend it to any student studying for the SAT. It would make a great group project.
What a unique and original tool for helping anyone, especially students, increase their vocabulary prowess! As a former English teacher and school administrator with 20 years of experience working with students from kindergarten through college, I find this book to be an engaging tool for students. I wish this had been around while I was preparing high school students for college! Visualize Your Vocabulary would have been highly valuable to them as they wrote a variety of papers, studied for SAT and ACT exams, and wrote their college entrance applications. Having earned my own higher level degrees, including a Doctorate in education, I can attest to the need for a deep and varied vocabulary from an early age through adulthood. The combination of images connected to unique mnemonic stories and ideas aids in the retention of the word and it's meaning. It is nice to see a creative alternative for learning vocabulary. While Mr. Gardner's book provides all the traditional elements necessary to learn and understand vocabulary; such as word origin, definition, part of speech, and a descriptive sentence, he also makes creative connections to everyday ideas that students and adults can relate to and easily remember. I would recommend this to students from 6th grade through post-graduate work, as well as anyone looking for a fun way to expand their own vocabulary!
Excellent book! My 8 year old loves it. He says is his favorite book. He takes it to school. Every day he arrives home from school and says he has learned one or two words. (This review is meant for Vocabulary Cartoons book)
Most of us have the experience of trying rote memorization to learn and remember study material and remember how painful that was! Learning is best done in an atmosphere of fun that involves our senses. Visualize Your Vocabulary does just that--uses fun pictures and humor to help us learn vocabulary, especially for words that are not common or in regular verbal use. It's a great book for preparing you for the SAT. I am having all of my children use it.
I had a good laugh while thinking it is also a great way for no-so-young people to keep their learning skills sharp!
A great way to learn vocabulary! We keep one by our dining table and learn a couple of words a night a dinner. It is a great way to interact with our teens and engage them in conversation with the descriptions and drawings. This is a great purchase!
As working adults that love to learn, we have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Every morning during breakfast, we read a new word. Seeing an illustration and hearing the word used in an interesting and clever context, really helps me remember it and use it in my daily vocabulary. I feel more confidant in my vocabulary and feel that reading this is even fun for us to do together! I only wish there was a book like this when I was younger & in school. I know I would have been more successful. This is how I learn best!
