For years now, Princeton Review has slapped a new cover on this good-but-not-great book, calling it the "201x Edition," but doing little to nothing to update it from earlier versions (it took 3 years or so, for example, for them to fix significant typographical errors in the section on order of operations). This was even true after the SSAT released two all new practice tests 2 or 3 years ago, tests which indicated that things had changed (for example, the concepts covered in math were quite a bit more advanced). Now, for 2017, they've cut out over 100 pages, removing a lot of the best material, without reducing the price or indicating in any way that this is an abridged (but not updated) version. This is cynical and cheap. If you're going to buy a PR SSAT book, go with an older edition.
We teach classes and have provided this book to all of our students for the last 15 years. It HAS BEEN a great resource for skills, strategies, and test questions. Unfortunately Princeton Review REMOVED every Synonym, Analogy, Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension drill in the 2017 edition. They added full explanations of the answers of the practice tests which may help some but definitely NOT what we need for our classes. We are always looking for drills and extra practice problems and this 2017 book does NOT have them. Disappointed with the changes. :(
The changes made to the ISEE portion of this edition seem to be just the removal of most of the practice exercises. Now there is only general information and the practice tests. The 2016 edition has much more to offer.
I love Princeton Review products. When a new tutoring customer asked for SSAT math prep, I looked for a TPR book first. I like the math drills and explanations. I also deeply appreciate that there is a practice Middle Level test along with a practice Upper Level test, as most books only cover Upper Level. As far as methods go, they are similar to the strategies in TPR's P/SAT books.
Very helpful! Great to have the practice tests and the list of vocabulary words! Well worth it, especially if your child is not used to taking a lot of standardized tests. Learning, for example, whether to guess or not, or how to dissect the analogies, or what's expected on the math problems is quite useful.
