`The Secret Life of Trees' is a pretty comprehensive popular science book that explore the various aspects of tree life around the world. It is written in plain language and if you have read other popular science book then you will slip right into this with ease. Part 1 looks at what makes a tree, from their basic make-up, to more in depth genetics, Part 2 (the driest part for me overall) looks at the various species around the world, how they are catalogued and how they function in their environments, Part 3 explores why trees live where they do, why they behave as they do, how they interact with each other and other animal species and a whole host of other information. This was the most fascinating part overall. Finally, Part 4 looks at the future of trees and how they can be utilised better and how we can care for them more for the benefit of the trees and society at large. This book has some wonderful phrases in it that make it all the more delightful to read, for example it says `Asokas are said to blossom more vigorously when given a good kicking by young women. Don't we all.' This and other similar phrases make a dry science book more enjoyable and raise a smile as you progress through the pages. If trees have even remotely interested you then I'd recommend this book, you will be amazed at the science and behaviour behind these seemingly benign organisms and you will never look at them in the same way again. A rare treat in a book.Dedicated to Stephen A. Haines whose reviews inspired me to read some amazing science books and who will be greatly missed.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

This is a brillant Book. It fits a wealth of information into comparatively few pages. It makes science understandable and presents trees as the enchanting creatures they are. The book's style is brilliant. An ideal textbook for biologists, gardeners or foresters and other people with a passion for trees and Natural History. I hope a translation into German will be available soon.

I can turn to almost any page of this paperback book and be amused and amazed. For that reason, this could be a perfect bedside book. You don't need to read it from start to finish in order. The man is a poet, the Bill Bryson of the forest, the jungle, the city trees, and the garden. Tudge has ideas on a wide range of topics that he ties in creatively and fascinatingly with trees and philosophy and sex, drugs, rock and roll, and on and on.I clicked on the hardcover version and found a review by Spider Monkey that's worth reading for its sensitivity as well as a good description of the book. It's a shame that people who are not interested in used hardcover books may not find this excellent review. If I could get my hands on the hardcover, I would, but I live in Thailand, so airmailing a hardcover book is a bit expensive.

One of the best nonfiction books I've ever read. I bought a gift copy for my son Jack O'Shea, an arborist.I particularly like Tudge's idea of agroforestry. That could possibly save the planet. Not much else will.

Shipped on time and in great condition. Very happy with my order! I just started the book and I am already hooked.

Well written book, science with love

Good book, bought for a gift.

good book...
