I always get annoyed with books which have misleading titles and I never really expected to find one coming from the otherwise excellent publishing house of Time Life Books. Predominantly throughout the 19th Century, the USA and several countries from Europe had extensive whaling fleets. I would have thought, therefore, any book with the title "The Whalers" would have given equal coverage to all of those countries involved in this trade at that time. This book, however, places great emphasis on the whalers from the USA with other countries either getting scant mention or no mention at all. Whilst there is nothing wrong with that, I just think that any person who wishes to read about global whaling during the 19th Century will need to find another book altogether. As for the content, it is written in a somewhat patronising tone - almost as though the author expects his work to be read by a class of children with limited intelligence. It is a tone which will annoy many readers.Quite frankly, there are much better books on whaling and much better books on American whalers and whaling and, for the very first time, I find myself exceedingly disappointed with a product from the Time Life stable of books. The illustrations are, for me at least, this book's one redeeming feature.NM

Although I have not read The Whalers yet, I have looked at all the pictures and have read some of the captions on some of the pictures. Having visited places as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts and seeing the movie Moby Dick motivated me to want to buy any book about the history of the whaling industry. This will be an added interest to my collection of some volumes of the Time Life books of The Seafarers.

Beautiful pictures and narratives about 18th century Whaling. For all ages. The art work is worth an extra mention. This is the kind of book you pick up and read and look at it in bits and pieces.
