The Last Ocean organization started in 2004, joining scientists and environmental groups in a campaign to have the entire Ross Sea designated as an international marine protected area. One of the founding members of The Last Ocean is John Weller, whose photographs from the Ross Sea were collected during four trips to the Antarctic, including a four-month stay at McMurdo and Cape Royds, home of the southernmost penguin colony in the world. This is the most beautiful collection of nature pictures that I have ever seen. John Weller and Carl Safina are luminaries in the world of natural science, photography and marine education. This stunning book is a true labor of love and a prayer to the beauty of nature in its purest state.
The pictures alone make this book worth it. The images are truly breath taking. John Weller was able to inspire by capturing the landscape in it's pure and undisturbed form. The text includes a foreword from well known naturalist, Carl Safina. A wonderful book that explores the natural richness of the southern ocean and the continent of Antarctica. Highly recommend to others.
The pictures are amazing, as is the story. This world is as foreign as another planet. Weller takes us there, actually risking his own life because of his passion to preserve this last piece of unspoiled territory on the planet.
John Weller combines two extraordinary talents in the service of his compelling environmentalist message. The images in The Last Ocean are exquisite and emotionally engaging. The narrative incorporates insights in ecology and in environmental science in a compelling auto-ethnography. The result is a volume that is as thought provoking as it is lyrical, a volume that serves the lofty goals of the Ross Sea Project brilliantly.
