I wish 5-stars had something else besides "I love it." I do not love this book, or fully agree with the author, but the writing is clear, often witty, and makes a great deal of technical information understandable. Maybe a choice of "excellent" and "I love it" would work better. Sernovitz is an interesting author; he has worked in finance related to oil and fracking, but also too time out to write a couple of apparently so-so novels, so his writing skills and his perspective is a bit different than one might expect in a book like this.He seems to know literature, so the title might relate in some way to the Romantic era novel The Red and the Black, which one might describe as a symbol of royalist and revolution in France--in this book the royalists would be the traditional oil industry and the revolution as environmentalism, with fracking as the dynamic that may lead to positive change. Sernovitz sees global warming as real and potentially devastating; his description of how traditional oil people regard the issue is depressing but very very good. He sees fracking as a progressive technology and the gas produced as less polluting than coal, and as something of a bridge to new energy technology such as solar (he sees such technology as the future, again differing from the industry typical view of seeing electrical cars as an expensive sham).Perhaps the most valuable portion describes the rise of fracking technology and how it works. The development has been fast, and has altered the US energy position, back to dominant producer and soon gas exporter on a massive scale.
