There was once a little gardener and his garden meant everything to him. He worked hard, very hard, but he was just too little (or at least he felt he was).In this gentle, beautiful tale, Emily Hughes, the celebrated author of Wild, departs from the larger than life Wild-girl of her debut to pursue a littler than life Gardener, in a story that teaches us just how important it is to persist and try, no matter what the odds. With delicately woven tapestries of illustrated magic, Hughes once again transports us to a world not unlike our own, while still brimming with fantasy and wonder.Emily Hughes was born in Hawaii but lives and works in the United Kingdom. She is inspired by Chinese cinema and illustrators such as Blair Lent and Gyo Fujikawa. Her work has been exhibited across the capital and her book Nana Shaped Like a Banana came second in the 2012 Macmillan Prize for Children's Picture Books. Her first picture book has been highly successful in bookshops and libraries across the United States and United Kingdom.

The little gardener is so little he can't do much in his garden except raise a beautiful big flower. Although the little gardener works hard all of the time, the garden is pretty wild. Little gardener is getting tired from all of the hard work. And still his garden looks pretty wild in its dark, green lushness. One day, a large flower appears and attracts the attention of someone bigger than the little gardener who sleeps and sleeps, weary from his work. The big girl cultivates the garden until there are many flowers and blossoms. When the gardener awakes, there is a lovely, blossoming garden full of colorful flowers. If your little ones likes gardens or flowers, this might be a fun read. 3.5 stars

Beautiful illustrations and lovely story. Bought it for my neighbor who has a container garden inside because it's so cold here. Seems that seeing gardening in a kid's book might make it more of an normal, every day expectation for everyone. I mean if a kid reads it and sees a plant or two around, there will be much less of a learning curve to having their own garden later in life. Even if it's a pot of basil... and that means there's more local food and that's one tiny step forward.

This is a gorgeous story that teaches work ethic, perseverance and hope. All of the values you want your kiddo to learn early and often. I just love it. The illustrations are beautiful too.

This story is so beautiful in its illustrations and story. It is such an adorable story of how a lot of hard work and a little bit of hope can really make a difference. Bought this book to keep for myself to re-read, such a wonderful story.
