This book starts right where Once leaves off, so make sure you have read that one and remember what happens. This book is realistic fiction. At the end, the author even tells you that he has read many Holocaust books and gives much credit to those who have written real accounts of their lives. Still, this is a great portrayal of WWII from a Jewish child's perspective. It shows the naievity of a child who then grows up and learns what is really going on. It is sad yet hopeful, and it is very honest. It is very suspenseful and dramatic, which is definitely what you would expect from a story of that time. I was glad it was honest and not sugarcoated.

My Year 8 students were held absolutely spellbound by this novel. It moved some to tears, (including their teacher) and some to anger. Perhaps the most profound effect it had was to make the children ask, as they often did, how can people treat other human beings like this? We read 'Once' last term, 'Then' this term and we plan to read 'Now' next term. Thank you Morris Gleitzman for bearing witness and making this terrible time in history accessible for my students.

I teach a class that studies the first book in this series 'Once.' On completion, they were desperate to read the next installment, 'Then.' When that happens, you can be assured a book has what it takes! As an adult reader, I found the ending somewhat rushed, and tragic events happening almost too quickly to allow them to sink it -Gleitzman perhaps missing an opportunity to drive home his message.

I was driven to read this book after reading "Once" which I found a tad confronting, however after a fairly promising change "Then" outdid it considerably. My daughter suggested I shouldn't read the book, but I decided I had to. When the farm was attacked and they lost all the animals, especially Leopold I cried but read on expecting a happy ending. The end was extreme and I was a mess and decided I'd have to sell my VW.Once again after discussing the book with my daughter we were amazed that her children coped with the story better than she did and certainly better than I did.I am not sure whether I'm brave enough to read the next book or not.

Very moving and engaging story. I truly enjoyed every minute and could't wait to find out what happened next. Found it had sometimes to laugh at the child like perspectives of the awful things that were really happening. Must read

I liked the fact that there were more than one books in the 'once' series. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action, but also to someone who likes a sad book or is looking for info on WWII. You may want to read 'Once' first though. I rated it 5 stars because I don't normally cry over any books, but this one had a few tears escaping. Morris Gleitzman, I thank you for writing this book and also writing Once, After and Now. I also thank the people who died and went through struggling attempts to get the stories of the holocaust to people now. I pray for all the families who are suffering during any crisis today or any other day. The people who died will remain in our hearts.

The book is fantastic and the delivery and quality of the actual book was great, i recommend this book and its sequel to anyone from any age group who's interested in a story of a boy during the Holocaust.

its sad how (i dont wanna spoil it) and ( dont wanna spoil it still) but its a beautiful that appears to be true from other jews in the past, but from a different perspective of how they were sheltered
