To tell the truth, I was really nervous to take the CLEP exam... but once I got this book, I got online and took their diagnostic CLEP, which is free with the code on the inside of the book. It told me EXACTLY which sections in the book i had to study and which ones I had just gotten a little rusty on and needed touching up on. In addition, each section had a ten question quiz at the end so you could make sure u understood it. It saved me so much time and I took their two practice tests online (also free with the code on the inside and the two practice tests are also in the book, but the online version times you and helps u get used to taking this kind of test at a computer). Also, each test and quiz, online at their site or in their book, includes a comprehensive explanation to each question so u could understand where u went wrong in getting your answer. And the best part is that I aced that CLEP, only getting 3 out of the 60 test questions wrong! Good luck on the college mathematics CLEP and I hope you find this review useful.
I purchased this in preparation for the College Mathematics CLEP exam (took it April 2014). I did the diagnostic test as well as the practice exams, which were included with the book. The timer on the practice tests helped me learn to pace myself for the real exam. After taking the exam, I found that the questions in the book & practice exams were much more difficult than the ones on the actual CLEP, but I'd rather have it that way than to practice easy questions and have the real test be more difficult. The material was completely relevant and a great review as I haven't studied this type of math in 8-10 years. The solutions are broken down after the problem, and easy to understand. I studied for about a week before the exam and scored a 79/80. Good luck!
I was surprised to see that this book leaves out AN ENTIRE SECTION tested on the CLEP. There is ZERO financial math included, and it is now part of the CLEP. I was able to use the other parts quite well and passed with a 61, but the fact that I was not prepped at all for the financial math was jarring. It says on the CLEP website that financial math is part of it, so I glanced over it, but was disappointed that this prep system does not cover it at all. Be warned.
My son got an 80 out of 80 on this CLEP! Granted, he already knew a lot of the material and did it to get easy credit, but he mainly used this book for it. If you look at the College Board website, they changed the description of what is in the test starting Sept. 2014. Grab a book like Demystifying Business Mathematics from the library and use a few pages out of it that are on the new topics list on the College Board site. My son used it to brush up on bank account interest (simple, compound) and annual percentage rate (APR). If you are already doing well on the practice tests from the REA book, you probably don't need to use anything else.Something that has been HUGE for my son in studying for CLEPs: Get the Kindle version and download the free Kindle app for your PC or MAC. Highlight and make notes as you study. On the desktop version, you will see all your notes in a column down the side while still having plenty of room to see the main text. When you are through the book, go through and copy and paste the sections of notes you still need on a separate document to print out and study, modifying as you master the concepts. This will be even more helpful for the College Algebra CLEP, as you will end up with a page of formulas to memorize.The Kindle and book form of the REA books have one preliminary and two practice tests in the back. You will also have a code that will give you a discounted price of $1.99 on their website (usually $15) to take the tests online. If you are buying this book, I HIGHLY suggest you pay the $1.99 for this. It gives you a score and shows you the correct answers for the ones you missed, and explains why. It rates each section of study (chapters in the book) to tell you if you are strong, need a little more study, or are weak. Then you know which chapters to go back to.
I was able to easily prepare for an pass the CLEP exam with a very high score using just this book as my study guide. I studied for about 3 weeks and used the practice exams to measure my retention and understanding. Use it and skip the class...
This book did outline the CLEP very well, thogh I felt a bit under-prepped by solely using this book. You will need quite a bit of prior knowledge of college mathematics to be able to understand this book completely. I felt the need to supplement this book with Youtube videos that explained the theories and rules that are explained only briefly in this book.
I used this book for over a week studying for the CLEP math test. I only used this book and the test on their website for practice. These questions are HARD compared to the actual test. Which is great. I only got to about 60% of the answers right each time I took it before I tested. I got a 72/80 on the actual test (50 to pass). Who knows how they actually score them. If you can understand the concepts in this book well enough to attempt the questions in the practice tests, you'll do great! I was surprised how easy the test seemed after working through these problems. So, so glad this book helped me avoid two whole semesters of math.
