As an ISEE and SSAT tutor of many years' experience, I know how hard it is to find adequate prep materials for these tests. The test makers provide only one (ISEE) or two (SSAT) official practice tests and do not publish any of their exams or allow non-students to take the tests. Both tests were revamped in the past 6 years, but test prep books by all the major publishers have not changed enough to be truly useful study tools.Peterson's is a case in point. The text is good for very basic skills in mathematics, with lots of review and drills in computations and easy word problems. Unfortunately, mastering this material is totally insufficient for success on the Upper Level ISEE or SSAT where the Math Achievement sections are above grade level and Quantatitive Reasoning is sophisticated.In Verbal, this book is simply terrible. The Sentence Completions are way off base, with weird vocabulary and odd combos, no transition words. In short, they are nothing like the real ISEE.I would recommend students who use this book do so at least a year or two before they intend to REALLY study for their exam. That way, they can master basics and get somewhat familiar with the test formats and then use a combination of other materials when they are ready to get serious and raise their level. The Reading Comprehension here is of a very low level and the questions are not challenging enough for even a lower age level exam. Real ISEE and SSAT passages and questions are obtuse and subtle but Peterson's are plodding and obvious. It's a shame that there have been virtually no changes from the 8th edition to the 9th edition of this book.
