This book saved my behind with the CLEP test. I'd argue that the CLEP Calculus exam covers quite a few topics which aren't necessarily given a lot of time in a traditional Calculus class. This book (along with the online tests) were KEY to me passing the CLEP Calculus exam.Also, I'd recommend buying a new version for the online practice exams.
So of course the online code in my book didn't work...I ended up paying an extra $10 to access the online content...The book is intended to be used as a refresher by someone who has already had a calculus course, and it would be effective if it weren't for all of the errors. There are lots of little typo mistakes, such as signs being reversed cos functions changing to sec functions and other silly typos. I have spent a lot of time chasing my own tail when working through this book just because I assume the math in the book is all correct....It isn't...maybe try a schaumb's outline instead
PROS:Thorough, yet brief and easily understandable explanations of the core concepts.Written in language closely aligned with the CLEP exam (ie: teaches to the test).Appropriately challenging sample questions provide strong preparation tool for the exam.Many sample questions with detailed/step-by-step explanations.CONS:ALARMING NUMBER OF TYPOS! Typos in a widely circulated publication are bad enough, but in a math exam prep text they are especially egregious. Nearly all of them are notation mistakes where a minus sign or the like is missing, or a problem's solution states a slightly different question that was asked. It is very confusing. I'm sorely disappointed in REA for their lack of attention to detail in this text. Their other guides are stronger than this.With the typos in mind, and the brief explanations, I can only recommend this text as a final preparation tool for the CLEP after having already learned and practices the material elsewhere. It is best used as an orientation to the style of calculus problems the CLEP will contain. The CLEP questions are quite different than other Calculus 1 study tools, so this text is very helpful in that regard.This text IS NOT to be used for learning the material! Far too many mistakes and not enough detail.
I purchased many of their other products. My son is using this to study for his CLEP. He said the book is helpful, but when we tore off the seam to access the online test code it was hard to pull off without pulling the code off. After some water and patience we got it off. Then when we entered the code into their online test site, it didn't recognize it. However, after 2 attempts the system noted that it may have been a mistake and they will inform the site manager of the incorrect number. The good thing was it still allowed my son to access his test. I took off 2 stars because of the test hiccup and the mishap with tearing off the gray tape to access the code. The last thing I wish it had was more examples and better explanations for answers.
