Purchased the digital edition for Kindle. The book description is the same as print editiona and it says that the diagnostic and practice exams come with the purchase--they don't. In order to access this content you must pay an additional fee which is not mentioned in book description. When I mentioned this to Mariela at REA customer service, she was rude and unresponsive. I asked for a supervisor, but according to Mariela "they aren't available right now".
Maybe someone would consider this book a jumping off point, but there is SO MUCH that this book does not even come close to covering!!After reading this entire book I took the practice quizzes in the back- wow. So much on those quizzes that is not even touched upon in the book. Beware that this is not a comprehensive guide.
Additional fees are charged to receive full content. This is NOT noted in the description. I paid the additional fee and have been waiting hours for the access code. The website promises receipt in minutes. This is not acceptable! If I do not receive the code by close of business today, I will demand a refund.
This is the second CLEP test I have taken and I feel like the information provided in this book did not help me as much as the Government REA guide for the Government CLEP. I took each practice test 3 times and I did pass the actual CLEP but they miss a lot of information on important authors in U.S. History. They do cover the presidents, several wars, and amendments quite well. This was my sole source of studying but I took AP U.S. History in high school so I think that helped me as well. If I were you, I would spend more time on the 1920's to 1970's as the more modern information like the Persian Gulf War and the late 19th century information was used for very few questions on the CLEP. Good luck!
This book and series of books I believe to be the best prep available out there. While these don't cover EVERYTHING that's in the CLEP test, this gives you a good idea of main content and helps determine what else you should study from other places. The online practice tests make it SO MUCH simpler to actually take a practice test (versus pen/paper), and it bucketizes your results with where you are strong and where you need to sharpen up. This book alone may not help everyone pass in one try, but again it gets you most of the way there, and with a little additional studying and practice testing anyone should be able to pass. I also ordered the CLEP Official Study Guide just for the additional practice test and used wikipedia to brush up on subjects I needed to. I was able to pass my test in one attempt.
This book is OK and gives you a general idea of what you need to know for the CLEP. I highly recommend using this book in conjunction with Barron's EZ 101 American history, 1877 to the present. If you use both of these books, you will pass the test. Read this book, and Barron's, and then take the practice tests in this book, and then read them both again (don't worry they are both short), and then you should pass this test with ease. I did very well on the exam and have never taken a history course. Also, I only spent about three days preparing for the test but I would recommend about 2 weeks, 2-3 hours per day if you are serious about passing it. Lots of info.
Excellent product! I wouldn't advise using this as your only study guide, but it is great for giving an overview of all of the major events that have happened since 1865, highlighting the important acts, people, and movements. The practice tests included with purchase are the most helpful! They gave me an accurate gauge of my readiness for the actual exam. I made a 69/80 on this test yesterday using this book + InstantCert (passing is 50/80) for only 2 weeks. Use this book and InstantCert, and you should definitely pass.
This book covers nowhere near what one needs to study. It pretty much only good for the tests. I strongly recommend finding other study material. The tests do cost extra if you get the Kindle version.
