This is an oustanding text on the physics of the formation of structure in the Universe. It is written at the level of a beginning graduate student in physics or astronomy, and will provide sufficient background for the student to begin serious research in this area. The text is well written and the topics well chosen. It was written in 1998, so it is already a bit dated (it obviously contains nothing about the most recent advances in dark energy), but all the basics are here. This explains what we know and what we don't know about how and why clusters and galaxies form, dark matter, and the Big Bang.
Great book written in the subject of large scale structure formation. Clear style and flow enables the use of this book to a person with moderate knowledge about cosmology. It is not super hard to understand. If you are good at calculus and have a good knowledge about basic cosmology this book won't be disaster. I would say one of the best and well written book in this area which can address a wide range of readers
This is an outstanding textbook on cosmology, structure and galaxy formation. It's very detailed, well written and the main topics are very well chosen, covering a wide range of themes: in particular, on each topic, a good emphasis is given to explain what is known and what is actually unknown; I think this is the correct approach in astrophysics and cosmology. The level is appropriate to graduate student, with a decent mathematical background.Very good binding and hardcover: it's durable and solid, with a good value for money.Remark that this is the 2nd edition, updated during 2008: a little bit dated (regarding the most recent advances in dark matter and dark energy), but anyway excellent for basics arguments.
The book is very detailed and covers a wide range in galaxy formation. It explains astrophysical processes very clearly and can be recommended for students.
This is a great text book summarizing cosmology, structure and galaxy formation.I strongly recommend this book to graduate students.
