This set includes the trilogy, along with the extra book titled, "Four". I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!
We checked out Divergent from our local library for my grandson, but my daughter and I enjoyed it also. We definitely wanted to read the rest of the trilogy, so when I found this set that also includes the bonus book Four, I pre-ordered it. My daughter and grandson have finished the entire set and I am almost through Allegiant. I highly recommend this trilogy to any reader 13+ who enjoys science fiction, adventure, stories set in the future, or just plain old good story-telling that will also make you think. I would also recommend this as a good series for a family to read and discuss together.
This book series was a rather weird read for me, considering I have read and seen other dystopian movies and books such as The Hunger Games, and jumping into something like this definitely highlighted the cliches that run rampant in all of them. Despite all of this, I actually enjoyed the first two Divergent novels and I enjoyed the film when it came out. The first two books weren't entirely original, but they weren't bad either. I enjoyed reading them.Allegiant is where things took a nosedive for me. The entire plot line of the outside the fence (which I won't spoil) didn't really feel like a good plot to me, in fact, it felt like Roth had another idea, but it was rejected, and she had to shoehorn a new one in. The ending wasn't great either, and to me felt a bit rushed and forced. This series gave me high hopes, until the third book. I have not read Four yet, nor do I plan to for a while, before I get over the fact that the series was great, until the end.Overall - 3/5Divergent - 4/5Insurgent - 3.5/5Allegiant - 1.5/5
I really enjoyed reading the whole series. For me, the great characters and intriguing storyline is what kept me reading. Be ready to smile, frown, laugh, and cry - the characters of the Divergent series are wonderfully captured and translated, growing more mature and depth as the story moves forward.Recommendation: Read Tobias' Collection of Four Short stories before starting the second book "Insurgent" as it will provide much needed background on Tobias' life. You will understand much more about his character and his choices.Thank you, Mrs. Veronica Roth, for writing a very enjoyable book series. I know all stories have an end, but I will miss reading about Tris, Tobias, Christina, and the rest of the characters. Good job!
FOUR I would read after reading DIVERGENT. I thought it should be read 4th, but no. I actually passed it on to some family members and had them read in book FOUR the section "The initiate", then start the book DIVERGENT. Gives more insight into the story and characters. After finishing DIVERGENT, go back and read the rest of the sections in FOUR, but skip the last few small sections in the back until you read the whole series, because it will ruin some parts or be confusing
If I had known how AWFUL the last book/ending would be, I wouldn't have even read the first one. This series is the most disappointing trilogy I've ever read, simply because the first two books were SO GOOD and so exciting, and the author totally botched what could have been a fantastic story...the story line was SUPER anticlimactic, the writing was really shoddy as if she was rushing to meet a publishing deadline, and the end was soooo poorly written and unnecessary. It felt massively contrived, like Roth was trying too hard to make her main character do something totally out of character, just because she wanted it to end a certain way.By the end of the second book, I couldn't wait to see what would happen! "Allegiant" was the biggest joke and made me wish I hadn't invested so much of my time into the series.My suggestion is to read the first two books and then watch the third movie instead of reading; I am so saddened to say that I think Hollywood will do a better job of telling the end of the story than Roth did at writing it.
