It's like the apocalypse came, only instead of nuclear bombs and zombies, Mike gets school participation, gay thoughts, and mother-effin' cheerleaders.Junior year is about to start. Here's what Mike Tate knows:His friends are awesome and their crappy garage band is a great excuse to drink cheap beer. Rook Wallace is the devil. The Lemonheads rock. And his girlfriend Lisa is the coolest. Then Lisa breaks up with him, which makes Mike only a little sad, because they'll stay friends and he never knew what to do with her boobs anyway. But when Mike finds out why Lisa dumped him, it blows his mind. And worse―he gets elected to homecoming court. With a standout voice, a hilariously honest view on sex and sexuality, and enough f-bombs to make your mom blush, this debut YA novel is a fresh, modern take on the coming-out story.

This book is narrated in Mike's voice, and he's an extremely likable narrator, which I think is why this book is so fun to read, even though it tackles some heavier issues like coming out as a teenager - something probably never easy even if one has a great circle of friends and loving family. Mike sees the good in everybody, and that makes it easier for me as a reader to see the good in Mike (because he's likable, but he also smokes weed and drinks and lazes around and is happy with getting C grades, all things which my straight-laced little soul cringes at). And there is a lot of good in Mike - he's a supportive friend to all his friends, he's a great older brother, a good son, a very good sport, and super soft-hearted. He is also smart, funny, and has a goofy self-awareness of his own teenage angst that carries him through his problems. A lot of emotional stuff happens closer to the end of the book, and I did get a little teary-eyed, but it was in the best way, and this is one of those really good teenage coming-of-age books.

3.5 starsThis book got off to a rough start, but after a couple chapters it smoothed out and was an enjoyable read. It's wonderful to see more books with bisexual MCs, and to see the journey Mike took with coming out.

This book really surprised me with its charm, candor, humor, and honesty. I loved that Mike was so average, and like a genuine teenage boy. The supporting characters were wonderful too. I was amazed at how much Goslee was able to accomplish in so few pages. I thought the characters were well defined and the story quite complete. I liked the way Goslee had Mike explore his emotions. He was happy, sad, confused, embarrassed, excited. I also appreciated that she did not make his coming out a total non-event. It seemed more real that some people in his life struggled with it. From his friends to his family to his internal monologue, I loved it all. I laughed a lot, but also sighed with a smile on my face.**PS I loved all the 90s musical references. They totally made me nostalgic and called to my inner grunge goddess.
