I bought my copy of this book in June at Schulman Grove (the Bristlecone Pine Forest), and it has been my best wildflower reference. Organized first by elevation, and then by flower color and number of petals, it makes it surprisingly easy to identify flowers in the field. It made my July trip very enjoyable, "bagging" [photographing] and identifying many new wildflowers. I hope to visit the Eastern Sierras again next year, and you can bet this book will be with me every minute. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in California wildflowers.And, by the way, McGee Creek and Lundy were both wonderful hikes to see the wildflowers in July. Just bring DEET. I am very happy with this book in many ways! It is super easy to look up a specific plant without going through the whole batch of pictures. The author cross referenced them by description, area found, color of flower, and shape of the flower. There is a "quick key" area in the front of the book that sets the reader in the right direction right away. I'm a little biased in favor of the author due to the fact that I am from the Tahoe area. I recognize all of the areas that he describes as to where these flowers might be found. I would love to take a hike with him and his wife some day! Well done Mr. Blackwell!
I bought this for a class through SCC and we used it as our text book. The guide includes most of the species we found while exploring both the sagebrush deserts and the mountain passes. While several rarer plants are not listed, this is a great field guide for the Eastern slope. Taxonomy has not been update yet, however.
I have numerous books on wildflowers and this is as good as I've seen. I especially like that there are frequently two photos of flower. One up close and one from further back. That really helps me to identify a flower. It will also sometimes show a different but similar looking species which is also quite helpful. I guess my only problem with the book is it only covers the area it says it does. I guess I'll have to get the book that covers the western Sierra.
This is a fantastic wildflower book. It's easy to use, is well organized, and has great photos and descriptions. I highly recommend it.
