Death Valley has a certain mystique about it. The name itself, to say nothing of the stark landscape and high temperatures, evokes a certain curiosity and leads many to visit California's largest national park. But if you really want to learn more about Death Valley, this guide is a great place to start. Filled with numerous factoids about basin and range topography, desert life, and the history of mining and settlement in the region, this book will tell you more about Death Valley than you would ever expect from such a slim volume. My favorite part, the quotes: "Death Valley has all the advantages of hell without the inconveniences."But you will also learn some important information too, like how to stay safe in the park. Drinking water is important because in sumer temperatures, you can lose 2 gallons of water a day just resting in the shade (of which the valley has very little). If you decide to go hiking, expect a gallon an hour loss, and you likely won't notice that because sweat evaporates so quickly that you might not even be aware of how much water you have lost.Complementing the text are a series of nice black and white photos featuring Death Valley personalities, old mines, and wildlife. The text itself is easy to read, fun, and you can put the book down and pick it up later without feeling any loss of continuity. On the whole, this is a fun guide to the park. No, it does not feature an itinerary for your next visit, but this is not pure trivia either. By the time you are done with this book, you will have a better understanding of the park's natural and human history, and enjoy your next trip that much more. I know I will.

This book can be read quickly and would be a great family activity while riding over to Death Valley. It is extremely well organized by subject matter and not a bunch of trivia randomly thrown together. If you don't have an interest in an area just skip it and move on, but it will all be interesting. I wish there were more books written like this for more things. It's just a fun book to have and will tell you things you will hardly find elsewhere without a lot of digging. Worth every penny.

Don has done it again. His latest trivia book is on Death Valley and through thorough, diligent research, Lago has uncovered amazing, entertaining, and informative facts about this remarkable national park. Even folks very familiar with Death Valley will be surprised by this treasure trove of new or little known information about the area's history, geology, weather, wildlife, and more. Buy it, read it, and if haven't already, pick up a copy of his Grand Canyon Trivia, too.
