My daughter gave me this book and it is such enjoyable reading. The short stories can be read during the quiet moments in the day and each one offers words of encouragement and love. The first story Beauty for Ashes reminds us of the value of the old-fashioned girl. It is such a sweet story about Bea, a young lady who believes she has no beauty of note. How refreshing when her high school friends vote for her as the best all around and a young man praises her for being a girl like his beloved mom. These stories are worth reading and rereading.
If you're a mom, you should read and own this book. It contains short stories you can read in snippets of time, for busy moms, but stories that will change your life. A good writer shows you rather than tells you. Wheeler has found and compiled engaging and entertaining stories written in times past that illustrate timeless truths. Stories of wives, moms, women who learned lessons that we all need to learn, written so compellingly that you want to put some of what they learned into practice. Your heart, soul--places within that you didn't know were there--will be touched. As in a painting, you'll see a picture of ways you can become a better wife and mother. Just by reading a really good story.
Finished book on 1/22/2012.We recently had our first child (a boy), so I got this collection on motherhood. These stories encourage, inspire, challenge and convict. A story has the power to implant truth in our hearts more powerfully than a large tome full of endless facts and figures. These stories made me want to live up to the examples of motherhood and also made me aware of areas I wanted to be careful of, such as discouraging our children or being too quick to jump to conclusions. Overall, I recommend it to any mother who wants an idealized example of motherhood in all its vast array of forms.
