How great is a $60, 1200 page textbook with no chapter or page breaks built into the digital version? Not so great. Thanks for nothing .
This is a great book on audiology; it explains the process of the processes that are involved in essentials of audiology and how they all fit together and come together to make the process work. It does it in a way that is very easy to understand and the author does a wonderful job of explaining the process and the pictures are add bonus.
I am a speech and hearing science major and this book made me hate audiology. The book does not explain concepts such as masking well and I was forced to seek out other resources. If you are physics major, you may like this book. However, the average student will find the information to be dense and at times incomplete.
I've just finished my first year of an AuD program and I've used this book as a supplement to Katz's Handbook of Audiology. Generally, Gelfand's book has become my go-to reference when I need a refresher for a certain concept. The book is organized well and focuses on the general concepts (the essentials!), just as the book is titled. It will not be sufficient for a practicing clinician (this is where Katz's book may come in handy) but as a student, this book has been a life saver.
This book is great. I bought it for my diagnostics course last year. It's extremely comprehensive and easy to read and understand. I can't begin to tell you how much I have gone back and used this book for reference in other courses.
The book was in good condition, but had some highlighting in it. I purchased it in August 2010 from Campus Book Rentals, LLC. This textbook is meant for someone who has physics or engineering background. As a former Spanish teacher taking my first Audiology class in my SLP program, I had to seek other resources out because I had difficulty understanding the author. I would highly recommend Clinical Audiology: An Introduction Second Edition by Brad A. Stach 2010 for someone who does not have a heavy science or math background in studying Audiology. This book would be a good reference tool for experienced Audiologists.
I can see how the other reviewer found this book difficult for an introduction to speech and hearing science. It is probably more appropriate for audiology graduate students. As an AuD student, I find that this book is very clearly written. Whenever I am confused about a topic, I do a Google Books search and usually come across pages from this book. They always clear things up for me, and are always better than what I usually get from the textbooks my professors chose to use instead. Because of this, I am buying it as a supplementary text.
A good guide to have if you do not wish to buy the big, heavy Katz handbook. Very detailed.Wish it had a chapter about Vestibular/balance tests, though.
