The Patient Advocate's Handbook by James Thomas Williams is an outstanding overview of the way an advocate or caregiver can manage home care with expertise and gain the best instruction from the hospital experience. The information in the book is presented in a logical and well-indexed manner so that it can be referenced as situations arise.Including the costs and assemblage of needed equipment is a unique addition to the information needed by the family and advocates of a patient at home or in the hospital. Learning how to deal with the financial aspects of services and care is a very valuable tool in navigating the medical and insurance aspects of illnesses and care. Also, it is most helpful to have pictures of the equipment in order to have an expectation of size and use of the suggested products. To the novice in this field of home and hospital care of a loved one, I can imagine no more useful guide to instruct and empower the caregiver and advocate. In the midst of a difficult situation, this knowledge will be very comforting in a new and complex schedule for all involved.
I recognized nearly every question in this book because i asked them over 18 months of caring for a cancer patient. Unfortunately, I didn't discover it until I no longer needed it. It would have helped if had found it in time.
I have found t his book helpful as I have started out as a patient advocate. it is easy to understand with terminology that can be comprehended without the need for a medical terminology book. Although one is needed,. I am looking to purchase another by this author.
There are a lot of essential facts about home oxygen equipment. I also like the inclusion of humidifiers and air purifiers and the explanation of the importance of optimal room humidity.
The strength of this book is quickly orienting readers with medical issues, so they can get past the deluge of new information that comes with hospital stays and home care. The chapter on insurance and Medicare was very helpful. Medicare and insurance bills are confusing and the explanations helped me sort it out and feel more in control.
I was looking for a book to help me with my Dad's hospital stay and, after taking him home, for issues with homecare. This book does both very well!More importantly you can see that the author actually went through a great deal of the information presented. This is first hand knowledge and much more than just research!
Here is a book that does a great straight forward job explaining home healthcare equipment as well as many other areas of consideration that advocates need to be aware of when deciding what to do when someone they love comes home from the hospital. This is the kind of book that lets you hit the ground running.
