Everything you ever wanted to know about sharks! The pictures will knock your socks off. Fun for children and serious adults alike. I love it! Nothing quite like it that I've ever seen.
I read a lot of books on sharks and this is one of the best! The writing is clear, accessible and lively; the author does a great job of translating scientific concepts in language that anyone can understand, and conveying why sharks are such unique and fascinating animals. The photographs are stunning but there are also a number of great illustrations that clearly convey ideas from the text-- an overhead "shot" of a reef showing which kinds of sharks might be found in which habitat, for instance, really helped me picture what this ecosystem would look like. The information is accurate, up-to-date, and well-organized, and goes far beyond the usual 'coffee table' book-- the chapter on shark reproduction, for instance, includes images I've never seen both of shark embryos in their different stages and of sharks mating. If you aren't a scientist but are fascinated by sharks and want to know more about them, and are seeking an accessible book with well-thought-out, beautiful visuals, this book is it.
Got this for my 8-year old grandson. He loves sharks, and loves this book. Upon opening it for the first time he named off every shark in there - without reading the captions! Couldn't have picked a better gift for the little guy!
