From the picture on the cover (which, by the way, is not the cover of the guide I received) I expected photographs of birds, not drawings. Very disappointed, I guess I should have known the word "illustrations" is another word for drawings. Would not have bought it and do not recommend it. The bluebird sitting in my tree looks vaguely like the one in the drawing, but I would not be able to use this guide to identify it for sure. Also, the birds in the guide are drawn pretty much the same size, so a downy woodpecker is depicted the same size as a pileated woodpecker two "illustrations" over, a crow the same size as a goldfinch - very deceptive,especially for someone not very familiar with birds. $ out the window.
This is great for a quick reference. We keep it next to the back door so we can spot new birds.We've purchased multiple guides similar (trees, birds, etc from multiple states we've lived in). Same quality, and my wife is now looking forward to seeing even more birds that she didn't know were in the area!
Wife and I just recently moved from the city to a nice home in the burbs. We put a feeder out and quickly saw a bunch of birds we've never seen before. This little fold out helped us identify what we were looking at.
