Introduction to Ocean Sciences uses students’ natural enthusiasm for the wonders of the ocean as a foundation for teaching core principles in this interdisciplinary field. Developing scientific literacy by emphasizing the real-world process of science, this text provides an accessible introduction to the interrelated physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes of the oceans, atmosphere, and coasts. The Second Edition has been fully revised and updated and offers improved pedagogy, an expanded art program featuring beautiful underwater photography by the author, and new multimedia resources for students and instructors.

Segar's book is profusely illustrated with many colour photos of the oceans. A very photogenic subject, as you might well imagine. Plus, there are copious numbers of maps and illustrations. These strongly buttress the text, with most textual pages containing images. The field is vast. From the sheer physical sprawl of the oceans to the various types of scientific analyses possible. Subjects discussed include dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and the effects these have on the ecosystem. We also see the differences between the pelagic and benthic environments. For the latter, there is also a distinction drawn between the deep ocean floors and those of the continental shelves. The economic productivity of oceans is not ignored. Mostly about the value of fishing and fisheries. A vital part of the effort to feed humanity.

This book is nearly everything I wanted, all in a single volume. It's a college textbook written on an introductory level. I teach middle school science in a land-locked state (TN) and aim to integrate ocean science into my curriculum. This text affords me the ability to do just that. Yes, I will simplify much of the material to a middle school level, but the chemical and physical characteristics of the ocean mesh nicely with my state curriculum on introductory chemistry. I only wish I had a teacher's edition to go along with it.

The description was true to what was being offered: damaged condition. Anyway, I bought the book because I needed it for a class. The cover was chewed and a few pages were ripped out, but in the end, it didn't matter because the content I needed was there. I was very pleased with this purchase!

I was very disappointed in this book! Text books are expensive these days and I expect to receive something valuable for my money. The layout is not good at all in this book. There are two separate sets of chapters one is the normal chapters and the second is then a condensed down version of the original chapters. They call this there key concepts section. But actually some information is only presented in this section and so any time you are trying to find an answer in the book you have to read through two different chapters. Furthermore 90% of this book focuses strictly on the chemistry and physics of the ocean with no mention of biotic factors. I expected to add my oceanography book to my library when I was through with the course; however, I was so underwhelmed that I saw no point in taking up the shelf space.

I am an earth scientist, but not in the marine science field. I needed to become proficient in some of the scientific terms and concepts of the marine sciences, and found this text quite helpful. It also includes a lot of the basic geology that students would pick up in a typical geology 101 course. I will keep in on my shelf as a reference.

I bought this book used, to avoid overspending at my campus bookstore. I saved over $50 and the quality of the text is fabulous. No tears, highlighting...it's like new!BUY USED BOOKS! :)
