While there's no book - so far - that's really helpful to the cold-climate grower, this one was really helpful specifying plants' size and hardiness. Also has excellent information on propagation & great photos. One caveat: As a hardened collector who has lost more plan than I care to admit, I advise not even thinking of trying for the crowded cactus greenhouse shown - unless you can provide dry air and excellent air circulation. Also, it would be helpful to have some discussion of which artificial lights are adequate and some guidance on their cost before a reader takes the plunge.

You can count on Sunset for good coverage of a topic. This book has the following chapters:*An Introduction to Succulents and Cactus*Starting a Collection*Caring for Cactus and Succulents*Indoors...A Variety of Uses*Landscaping Ideas*Propagating Techniques*Troubleshooting Plant Problems*SpecialtiesAmple photos (black and white) supplement the text, and simple line drawings show the steps for "How to pot a cactus" and "How to graft a cactus."

This is a list of varieties of cacti and succulents with very little information on each one -- a short paragraph. There is very little information on propagating, planting, etc., Not a book to start with.

This book taught me so much in the years when I first started growing cactus and succulents. Very informative and easy to understand.

VERY GOOD BEGINNNERS BOOK FROM "THE OLE DAYS". BASICS THAT COVER HANDLING, PLANTING, RAISING, AND GENERAL BASICS OF CACTUS. WORTH HAVING BUT NOT THE DEFINITIVE BOOK OUT THERE.

Although the book is a bit dated and there aren't enough color photos for my taste--it did have good and useful information--
