This is a wonderful introduction to Japanese haiku and related forms of Japanese poetry. It provides a clear understanding of the forms and mechanics of both Japanese and American forms along with examples and ideas for topics. I had been writing American haiku and senryu for a little over a year when I purchased this book. It gave me new insights and helped me hone my skills. I recommend it highly.
This charming little book is a wonderful addition to starting your day, whether with your morning cup of coffee, or in reviewing the day's lesson plan. Upon reading the poems therein, you will wonder why you had not heard of the authors until now. The occasional illustration serves as ambience, though the descriptive language in this book is sufficient without visual images. The book would serve as a useful text for a poetry class that uses workshopping technique; also nice to skim before retiring at the end of the day.
The guide lines for writing Haiku and especially the examples from renowned Haiku poets.I was able to quickly write Haiku related to my fine art landscape photos and include them inmy lectures.
It presents itself as a writers guide and all it is is the authors philosophical rambling....a worthless purchase
I expected far more from this books. It actually does not help a beginner to understand how to frame its first haiku ... Just gives some examples... With poor explanations.
