I didn't figure out until too late that this is the drama ADAPTATION of the original. Bought it in haste. What about a kindle edition of the original???
The story is probably the same but I was really disappointed to start reading about how the stage was to set be up for act one and then for every scene after. I didn't mean to buy the play version but it's not very clear from the picture or title of this edition. After I discovered this, I went back to the (kindle) book I had bought online and had to magnify the picture of the book to find the small print at the foot of the cover which says its 'adapted from the book by Edna O'Brien'. If you want the play version, then you'd probably be satisfied enough. The story itself is very depressing and I don't think I could be bothered to read the book at this stage!

I was totally disappointed since this was a play! Either it didn't say that on the initial explanation or I missed it. I don't enjoy reading plays so this book is sitting on the shelf gathering dust.
I should have paid more attention when I ordered this because I thought it was a series of novels, but it's a series of plays. That's okay, but I was caught by surprise.
Through public broadcasting I had heard about how great Edna OBians Country Girls was/is. I did not under stand that it was written as a play and for me, it just ended abruptly. It was disappointng. Perhaps in the day, it was interesting or shocking, but not for me.
This was the most bizarre thing I have ever read. I think the author was trying to channel James Joyce and Sartre in the same narrative, which was a weird stage play type thing that made no sense. Bizarre and just awful in my opinion.
I read the play, because I didn't have time to read the book. O'Brien is a great writer. This wasn't my favorite work of hers. The characters irritated me, which probably means that she did what she set out to do.
