The Elements Of Journalism, Revised And Updated 3rd Edition: What Newspeople Should Know And The Public Should Expect
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

Revised and updated with a new preface and material on the rise of social media, the challenges facing printed news, and how journalism can fulfill its purpose in the digital age.   Seventeen years ago, the Committee of Concerned Journalists gathered some of America’s most influential newspeople to ask the question, “What is journalism for?” Through exhaustive research, surveys, interviews, and public forums, they identified the essential elements that define journalism and its role in our society. The result is this, one of the most important books on the media ever written, and winner of the Goldsmith Book Award from Harvard, the Society of Professional Journalists award, and the Bart Richards Award from Penn State University.   Updated with new material covering the rise of social media, sponsored content, a new, collaborative web-based journalism in which anyone—professional or citizen—can produce news, and much more, this third edition of The Elements of Journalism is an essential read for journalists, students, and anyone hoping to stay informed in the digital age.

This is essential reading for journalism students, but for some really interesting discussions, I recommend pairing it with Campbell, LeDuff, Jenkins, & Brown's Race and News: Critical Perspectives. That book offers a number of contemporary case studies that highlight the inherent conflicts that emerge in Kovach and Rosensteil's "elements." Also, see Gonzalez & Torres' News for all the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media on how structural racism has distorted the information we've received from our news media over the years.Race and News: Critical PerspectivesNews for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media

Excellent account of how the Media works and should work. Helps understand the failures of the Media although does not quite delve enough into technique - e.g. the type of questions the Media asks (leading, loaded, argumentative, rhetorical).

My name is Sarina Girangaya, I attend Corban University where I'm studying journalism and I throughly enjoyed your book. I thought it was very interesting to see how journalism has developed over the years and how technology has shaped journalism. I found it inspirational, intuitive and incredible. Neil Postman said in his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, that writing "freezes speech," which is why it was so powerful when the printing press was invented. Your book is not just speech that has been frozen, it is a powerful force that clarifies how journalism should continue in this modern age.Thank you for writing this book!Psalm 55:22~ Sarina Girangaya

This book has many examples and easy to understand. Also, this book give people the main principles of journalism in 21 century

One of the best books about journalism, that I have ever read. Textbooks don't explain journalism ethics like this book does, and the best part is it is SUPER EASY TO READ. If all news providers read this book, I think society would have a better relationship with all media.

Great book, lots of great information. I love how it uses recent events which is important for class discussion.

Kovach and Rosenstiel have updated their insightful comments on journalism to reflect the current trends in journalism. A good read for journalists or news consumers.

Will be using this on a summer study abroad
