Let me start by saying that I have never considered myself a "bird guy." I know that I don't like seagulls much. However, my 4 year old is suddenly fascinated by them which prompted me to find this title. There are no words that I can express in this review that will give this book the credit it deserves. Not only is my 4 year old enamored but I suddenly find myself enthralled by the world of birds. The stories here are wonderful and the photos are truly brilliant. To call this a coffee table book doesn't feel right to me but it is, nonetheless, a book you will be proud to display in your home. Just don't let it be like all those other coffee table books that you don't ever pick up and read. This book deserves your attention!
My vocabulary is inadequate when it comes to describing this book. Gerrit's photos are stunning! To be able to capture such images requires an amazing talent and incredible patience. The essays are beautifully written. I am on my second read. I bought six copies to give to friends and they have all had the same reaction – an awesome publication.
I have watched Gerrit's work for years and am always humbled by his stunning work. Only a person who is not only the master of his art medium but someone who has the heart and empathy to enter the world out of reach to nearly all of us can do this beautiful of work.
Simply sublime. This book is gorgeous!!! When Gerrit posted that it was already available on , I immediately bought one. His work is just incredible. The book has some great essays, and of course is full of Gerrit's beautiful photography. Good job, Gerrit!!!
A truly amazing collection of photography. Vyn is one of the best nature photographers of our time - he captures the beauty, magic and vulnerability of birds in a way that has radically changed my appreciation for their place and importance on our planet. The patience and dedication it must have taken to capture many of these shots - especially of the rarer birds - is mind blowing. This book is a treasure that I hope to share with many.
THIS is a wonderful coffee table book! The quality of the photos, on semi-gloss paper, is superb! Every little detail is clear and the colors pop. The photographer has a way with making the most of natural light while capturing his subjects in sharp focus-- resulting in rich aesthetically pleasing photos. The essays are nicely written too.
The photographs are fantastic as anyone reviewing this will point out. The book is worth it for that alone. Beyond that, even experienced birders will learn new facts from the various essays. Feeding strategies of Harris Hawks, Kittlitz's Murrelet nest building, how a Bobolink changes seasonal appearance, etc. Get it for the photographs; read it to really appreciate what you're looking at.
beautiful up close and realistic photography. the essays are well written and insightful. I pick this book up often and spend 10-15 minutes in the bird world. it always relaxes me and reminds me to appreciate everything outside. I have come to the bird world late in life and regret that I lost so much time, but this gorgeous book helps me catch up.
