This sturdy guide typically resides on the windowsill facing my bird feeder, where it gets regular use when it isn't accompanying me on bike rides or hikes. By definition, a fold out pocket bird guide is a study in compromises. However, this guide makes all the right choices, and is an excellent quick reference. There are over 140 species, with a thoughtful mix of birds from many Utah habitats. It is organized into six main categories by type (perching birds, birds of prey, etc.). Lacking room for useable photographs or several views of each species, this guide features one clear illustration for most species (both male and female for some ducks), showing the most distinctive or important aspect of each bird. Text is judicious, but provides enough information for field identification. For example, I identified a Ferruginous Hawk this weekend because the guide notes that the "key field mark is pale, unbanded tail" and the illustration is of the underside of the hawk soaring and displaying the distinctive tail. Although I use a full bird guide book to confirm questionable sightings, this guide is perfect for refreshing my memory about similar species. Because you can see all of the birds at a glance, this guide is also far easier to use and less intimidating for novices than a book. Friends who can't tell an American Robin from a California Quail can look at my bird feeder, pick up this guide, and proudly say "that must be an Oregon race Dark Eyed Junco!"

This is very sturdy and extremely cool. It's pretty well laminated, so if you dropped it in the mud, you could wash it right off. It seems to have like three hundred birds on it, but I think in reality there are only 150.It has twelve panels, and a little information on each bird.

Nifty little fold out. Use it weekly. Very handy, in color, plastic coated, great quick reference.

This is a very good little guide if you want to travel light and do some birding. I loved it!

I much prefer a compact field guide called Birds of Utah. Spend the extra several dollars and you get much more for your money. This is a laminated folding guide that was a disappointment.
