This is a wonderful book. It has beautiful, full PAGE, color PHOTOGRAPHS of each bird in the book. How can someone argue with a photograph? Photographs are so much easier to use in identifying birds than drawings. Drawings are always subject to the interpretation of the artist who drew and painted them, and I have found that the artist's interpretation in other bird field guides often do NOT match what I observe in the field. This book also has the BEST layout of any bird field guide I have ever seen. The book is color coded and each color coded section represents the prominent colors of the bird. For example, a cardinal is in the "red" section of the book.A previous reviewer had noted that this book doesn't contain all species of birds that may visit New York. While this may be true, I have ALWAYS been able to find the birds that I have seen in the wild in this book. Furthermore, if additional birds were added, it is likely that the field guide would no longer be small and portable. The book also contains wonderful information for each bird, such as unusual habits, differences between the sexes, etc. There is also an excellent audio CD which accompanies this book. Although it is hard to find, this CD is spectacular! It follows the book exactly, and the 2nd edition of the book actually notes the CD and track number for each bird. The CD provides examples of each of the various sounds that the birds make, for example, the chickadee makes several different calls. There is also a narrator on the CD who gives a brief, but informative introduction, to the bird's calls/songs.If you live in New York and are a bird watcher, I highly recommend this book. I'll bet you'll find yourself using it more than any other field guide, I know I do!

Before getting this book it was always a debate whether we were looking at this species or that. Tekiela's book is an easy-to-use, well-organized hand-sized reference book that has it's own place near my porch where I like to photograph birds. This book is great as a photographer's reference. The book many photos of both male and female with interesting facts about the birds other than just the standard stats. Excellent photography as well.I use this one along with Tekiela's book on New York TreesTrees of New York Field Guide (Field Guides)together they make a very handy, comprehensive reference collection.

My father has been into trying to identify the birds visiting his feeders for a number of years. He was using a very short pocket guide, but it was woefully inadequate and incomplete. This book, however, is perfect. Within a few minutes, he was able to identify several birds he either hadn't been able to or had previously misidentified using his old pamphlet. There are wonderful color photos and detailed descriptions of the various species in this guide. And, it is small enough to fit into a coat or cargo pocket.

This has been a much-loved book in our house - we are actually on our second one. Both of my children have spent alot of time looking at this book. The book is so easy to use that even they can use it to identify a bird they see in the back yard. It is organized by color, which is the first thing you notice when you see a bird. If you see a red bird, go to the red section and look for the one that looks like what you saw. The color photographs are beautiful and make it easy to identify the birds we see. There is also a paragraph for each bird that describes how to tell the difference between similar birds. There is a good amount of interesting facts about each bird - eggs, how many days to incubation and fledging, what they eat, size and individual facts about each bird. Each bird also has a NY map that shows when you will see them in eaach area of the state (summer, winter, year-round, migration) My 5 year old son has memorized the entire book, and has learned to read by going through the book. It has sparked an intense interst in birding for him and he has brought the rest of us "along for the ride"!! We enjoy this book so much that I have purchased books from other states that we travel to so we will be prepared when we go.

As a beginner bird spotter livin in NY I love this book. Its replacing an old book that only had cartoon drawings which made it impossible for me to figure out what I was really looking at. The pictures are beautiful & extremely helpful. Easy to use w/the color coded corners, good info on the species. This book isn't collecting dust on my shelf - I use it all the time.

My niece got me this book for Christmas. I loved it so much I bought one here on for my fellow birder, my brother in law. It's a book with clear, easy to read text and bright clear pictures. There's a lot of information on each bird and they didn't miss one species here in New York. Well done!

There are full page pictures of each bird, with comparisons with similar birds, even describes the differences between juvenile and female birds. But wait! There's more, this guide even shows a rough area of sightings across NY (even during migrations/seasons). Even to those who aren't strictly birdwatchers, this book is very interesting and full of wonderful information and pictures.
