This is very handy to keep by the bird feeder. I bought a book first, but it had hundreds of birds and I couldnt page through and find what was perching at the feeder. This small pocket guide shows what will most likely turn up at my feeder, and its easy to take along on a hike. It arranges them by woodlands, meadow, shore, another useful feature.
I just retired and I'm getting really interested in the birds I see in my backyard. This little fold- out gives you the information you need to classify the birds by shape of beak, length, etc. Excellent for a beginner like me. I highly recommend it if you'r impatient as I am and want to get into all the beautiful birds near the NJ Turnpike. (Kidding). I follow up by using The Birds of New Jersey Field Guide.
Every year, a group of birders go to Cape May, New Jersey. This booklet helps great! I'm great with the birds but some are very hard to identify and New Jersey is well known for "Birds of Prey" (Hawks, etc) which in flight, all look alike.This booklet is great to practice with and also if taking photographs, to later look at your photos and then identify the photos as to what bird you photograph.That way you do not interrupt with your birding. In between birdwatching, you can take a close-up photo, and continue watching birds.There are many of these guides out for different places. I would recommend this one to anyone going to New Jersey and wants to really see the birds!
The wide spread of birds, which are grouped by similarities, makes this a very quick and easy tool to identify birds.
I'm an armchair bird watcher and I have been amazed at how many birds I have seen in my back yard. I only wish the guide told where there were differences where the male and female look different.

This is an excellent "quick" reference guide to NJ birds...a good introduction to familiar species.
