This book contains a great deal of historic information about how the Everglades functioned hydraulically and ecologically. Once that background is set then the discussion is expanded to ways to restore structure and function. Particulalry important is the "why"; what does a functioning system provide to people, even if they aren't interested in visiting the 'Glades.
