When the Belgian cartoonist Peyo created a village of cute little woodland creatures for his heroes Johan and Peewit to discover, he couldn't have known that they would wildly outgrow those humble origins to become a worldwide phenomenon all on their own. More than 50 years later, The Smurfs continue to delight us all with their silliness, bravery, heroism, and heart, and now we finally have a definitive collection of Peyo's original comics to see where it all began. Newly remastered and presented in original publication order, along with a Smurfy collection of historical notes and photographs, the stories in this volume introduce us to Papa Smurf, Gargamel, Smurfette, and the rest of the village in some of the most highly regarded comics the medium has ever known.

If you're interested in purchasing a handsome book, filled with tales of small blue creatures with grand adventures that will tickle your imagination and fill you with a sense of nostalgia, look no further!FeaturesThis book pulls out all the stops! The hardcover is beautifully designed with a spot gloss touch and the artwork is restored to its original size. This edition also includes the original covers from its first publication and commentary on three of the stories to help provide the reader with background information. In addition, there is an "Aftersmurf" (afterword) to tell the reader more about Papercutz's project.Initially when I saw that Papercutz published small, pocket book versions of the Smurf adventures I was excited! But I hesitated in purchasing it because of some reviews complaining about the small font and compact art that did not do the original art justice. So when I saw that they republished six of their adventures in one grand anthology, I just couldn't resist! One thing that I really enjoyed was that Papercutz decided to not only restore the art to its original size but also restore the original order of the series for the Anthology.ContentAfter reading a couple reviews about the content of the anthology, I just wanted to clarify that 'The Smurf Anthology #1' contains six stories. (The number in parentheses is the corresponding pocket book volume number.) -"The Purple Smurfs" (1) (with introduction by Matt. Murray, Smurfologist) -"The Flying Smurf" (1) -"The Smurfnapper" (9) -"The Smurf King" (3) (with introduction by Matt. Murray, Smurfologist), -"The Smurfony" (3) -"The Smurfs and the Magic Flute" (2) (with introduction by Matt. Murray, Smurfologist)BackgroundOne thing I did not know about the Smurfs that is revealed in the commentary is that they originally started out as minor characters for Peyo's "Johan and Peewit" comic series. They were such a hit, that Peyo included them in five other adventures before starting an entire spin-off series for them. Papercutz plans on releasing one of the six original Smurf/Johan and Peewit adventures in each new anthology.SmurfetteI noticed that 's description of this book claims that Smurfette is introduced in this edition. They are sadly mistaken. Smurfette will not be introduced until The Smurfs Anthology #2.Smurf EndOverall, the art and stories are whimsical and fun, and there is no better medium to read them in. The book itself is gorgeous, the images are printed in the size they were originally intended, and the book is loaded with little extra features that the other pocket editions simply lack. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase!

The Smurfs Anthology Volume 1, which has the books "The Purple Smurfs", "The Smurf King" (a.k.a. "King Smurf"), and "The Smurfs And The Magic Flute" together in one collection, has the benefit of being in a larger-sized book similar to the original French editions of the Smurfs comic books, which makes for easier reading for older audiences. It contains commentary from Matt Murray and Jim Salicrup about Peyo and some of the stories in this collection, plus the original French covers for the books (although it's disconcerting that the cover for Les Schtroumpfs Noirs is used alongside its English translation "The Purple Smurfs", but it's understandable given the audience that the story is published for). Again the translations use the annoying "me, I don't like" that Papercutz seems to be consistent for using so far with Grouchy's lines which ruin the spirit of the character for English audiences who are so used to hearing him say "I hate" rather than "me, I don't like". (Imagine Grouchy in The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol shouting "me, I don't like hats" instead of "I...HATE...HATS!") Anyway, if you missed the first three Smurf books that Papercutz published or would just like them in bigger print, this is a must-get book for your collection.

My daughters love the Peyo Smurf graphic novels. I don't really though, as the writing is so absolutely tiny, it strains my eyes terribly to read them (and I'm not all that old). I love these anthologies though! They're bigger than the single comics, so the writing isn't quite so impossibly small. The binding and pages are great quality, and the print is vibrant. This book will stand up to reading and last much longer than the single books, and it's more value for the cost as well. We'll be collecting them all.

a very nice collection, printed well, that translates wonderfully today. great for kids and older kids. The price is surprising as well for it's size and length. It's larger than standard american comics, and has quite a few stories (listed above). There are moments of humor that remind me of some of my favorite french comics, and other moments that remind me a bit the personality found in some manga. To me, these books feel timeless and universal.

As I grew up on the TV show, and now I am an avid reader of comic books/graphic novels of all sorts I decided to grab the first volume to see if I liked it or was too childish. Well, I have to say it's more enjoyable than the cartoon series (not to knock it, but...). The artwork and printing of the stories is crisp and clean and it was definitely published by someone who cared. While it's for all ages I think adults, especially those who grew up in the late seventies to eighties, will appreciate it.

I just adore the smurfs - I remember looking forward to the smurfs on tv every Saturday morning when growing up. They are one of the comfort memories of your childhood! A great book, and lot of fun for children and adults. I look forward to buying the rest of the set. Hardcover makes it perfect as a collector's item and gift. Smurftastic!
