I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my 13-year old daughter. It has some interesting ideas, Most could be gathered from web sites from a simple search as "bucket list to do before high school."More disconcerting, however, is the sensibility and logic in the commentary that is sometimes flawed, with the sort of presumption that most parenting must be deficient or ill-prepared. As a result, the language often reflects the sloppy thinking and cliche advice found in public service announcements.For example, the book presumes your teen should learn how a farm works, so that she knows how food appears in the supermarket "in this era of global warming." You get the idea. This is for a teen who is starting with a considerably low threshold for awareness of how things work in the physical world.Or that she should know who "Carson from 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'" is in order to understand fashion colors. Who? I'm supposed to introduce my child to a hyper-niched TV show on an alternative network loaded with sexual orientation stereotypes and general insipidness as a premise for reading this book? Again, the sensibility is off for many teenagers who have prepared, conscientious parents--even if those parents are lacking detailed knowledge of camp popular culture on HBO.Or even the idea that she should learn about safe sex because her "parents" will "shelter her from reality." Why should my daughter presume that about me and why should she be introduced to such a thought?
