Ghost stories: I love them. I grew up reading them, and I still enjoy finding new ones to try out today. One of my favorite ghost stories is one I read as a pre-teen. Have any of you read it, maybe? It's called The Doll in the Garden and it was written by Mary Downing Hahn. Another one of my all-time favorite ghost stories is Time Windows by Kathryn Reiss. The Ghost in the Glass House has a few things in common with the two books I mentioned above. Its intended audience is 12 and up, which is the same grade level as Time Windows. The Doll in the Garden was written for ages 6-9, but it's likely I may have discovered it when I was older than that. I wish I could remember! And also, there is a ghost! The setting of The Ghost in the Glass House is a seaside town in the 1920s. The protagonist is Clare, a twelve-year-old girl whose father passed away three years ago and who has been traveling around the world with her mother. All Clare wants to do is go back to her home town, but her mother isn't yet ready to return.Clare makes some friends during her summer at their rental home, and even finds herself caught up in a mystery surrounding a house made of glass that is on the property. She steals the key one afternoon, and discovers the ghost of a boy named Jack resides in the glass house. She begins to suspect that the maid, Tilda, knows who he is and what happened to him. Clare is ready to do all that she can to help Jack remember who he is.Wallace's writing impressed me so much; she doesn't dim her writing skills to match the level that people think kids of her intended audience are able to read. If we were to change Clare's age and re-write a scene here or there, this could easily pass for the quality of a teen or adult read.
