My children are wild about their wild cat facts. After reading dozens of books about these powerful predators over the last six months, my kids finally discovered this book. It's like their wild cat Bible. Gorgeous photos accompany this 280 page in-depth discussion of these fascinating creatures. If you have a child who is ready to make the jump from wild cat fan to major enthusiast, this is the book.
I own several of the Sunquist's books and have just bought this one to add to my library. It is written in a very readable style by Authors who really know their subjects. The photos are spectacular and the text very interesting and accessible to cat-lovers of any age. This is a gift that a child will cherish and read over and over again. What's not to love?
Full of beautiful photographs and very readable, up to date science. A great gift for a cat lover, which is why I have ordered one for my sister. There are cats here that I had never even imagined, absolutely fascinating, and written in a way that is very clear and logical. I am so impressed and highly recommend this book.
This is an amazing book that gives you an incredible amount of information with superlative photography of these fantastic creatures that are so rapidly disappearing from their natural environments! I can't convey how beautiful this book is with words alone, you simply must see it in person.Aside from how beautiful the book is, the information is well-researched and fascinating. The Sunquists have a long history of quality books on wild cats and this is certainly one of their best. Both are excellent writers on the topics of wild cats, conservation and all things natural. The photography is incredibly breath catching making the whole of the book a sumptuous addition to anyone's library.I absolutely enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to anyone wanting information on wild cats or who simply like to see how beautiful they are!
This book is more like a gorgeous encyclopedia than a dry reference work. At a size of 8x10 and 268 pages, it’s packed with information about just every feline species on planet earth. They range from the biggest and most ferocious wild cats, like the lion, to diminutive pet cats that wind around our legs at the dinner table. If you can’t find what you want by leafing through the pages, it’s in the comprehensive index. The writing is beautiful and evocative. On a page chosen at random, I found this lovely sentence: “Carried cross oceans or walking from village to village, cats gradually spread across the globe.” As a nature writer myself, I admire the author’s elegant style.Of the hundreds of full-color photos in the book, each is more breathtaking than the last. Amazing action shots show cats hunting, swimming, feeding—just about every behavior you can imagine. The images include excellent range maps of the wild species.Which is better, the writing or photography? It’s a toss-up. Both are prize-winning.BTW, I read the one-star reviews because I couldn’t imagine anyone finding fault with this beautiful book. The content of the bad reviews leads me to believe that a posse of people with an axe to grind banded together in a “review attack”. There are too many identical phrases and terms in the reviews to believe that they were generated by independent readers. Nasty stuff.I can’t believe this book sells for less than $40. All those beautiful color photos and carefully researched text! It looks more like a $70 coffee table book. The only criticism I have is that the type size is too small for my old eyes in the figure descriptions.
Fiona and Mel Sunquist have compiled and distilled the most recent research on the world’s array of wild cats into one easy to read and eye appealing volume. The writing is clear, concise, and easily accessible to all. Our 8 year old loves this book, which is full of the details that make cats unique and compelling; but even a seasoned felid biologist would enjoy reading and referencing this, and might find some unknown facts in here.
beautiful and revealing book in every way. this contents have been thoroughly researched. the stunning photographs are an added plus to a book for any type of cat lover - be they wild or domestic - be they layman or professional. bravo!
Loved the book! I think this book would be great in classrooms and I'm planning to give one to my daughter who teaches 5th grade. Pictures are outstanding.
