I teach junior high students. I had a lot of kids read the novel version who also liked the graphic novel. Also, this book was good for bridging kids from graphic stories to other kinds of text.
This is a creative re-imagining of the Alex Rider series. This novel closely follows the plot of the first novel. Alex Rider lives with his distant Uncle until his Uncle's sudden and surprising death. Alex soon learns that his Uncle was actually a spy and is recruited to finish his last mission, to find out what secret the rich and reclusive Harold Sayle is hiding. Alex, in the role of teenage James Bond, gets his own gadets and will rely on those, as well as his quick thinking, to save Britain from Sayle's evil plot. This popular series is actually enhanced by the change into the graphic novel format. The pictures enhance the action and suspense of the story, making an already accessible story even more accessible. Readers who love the series, as well as those who never have read the book, will both enjoy this engaging and well done graphic novel.
I am not familiar with the original Alex Rider novels, but these graphic novel adaptations are very exciting and fun to read aloud. I would caution that they are definitely intense and more suitable for 12 and up. I read one with my younger kid and he found them too scary.
I chose this for a student I work with, so we could work on his reading skills with some guidance. This is a student who does not like to read. The graphic novel version appealed to him and we were able to move forward. It is a quality resource.
A lot of the graphic novels have poorly done illustrations and text that are hard to read, but this series is very well done with colorful artwork and clear text. All three of my kids have enjoyed the series (ages 10 to 14). They kept turning pages.
I really love the Alex Rider Graphic Novels. At first I didn't think I would like them, because the drawings on the covers didn't seem very good. But these are very good! The best graphic novels of books I have read (Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel, The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel . . .). I actually liked how it wasn't EXACTLY the same as the original book. In some ways it was better. And the drawings were REALLY good. It almost seemed like an anime style. How the book was different from the original Stormbreaker was: Sabina was in this (where she didn't come in the books until Skeleton Key), a part was added at the end, the wording was not exactly the same. . . . Don't let the cover fool you. If you've read Stormbreaker and you like it, buy the graphic novel! I can't wait until all the books' graphic novels come out. I will definitely be getting them!
unfortunatly this graphic novel uses the movie script instead of the book as its inspiration. The drawing is good and easy to follow.
Stormbreaker is the graphic novel adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's very popular "James Bond" type of series. The artwork inside is an interesting mix between manga and traditional American comics, with an easy-to-follow storyline and decent adaptation of the source.Alex Rider lives with his banker uncle in London. His uncle travels around the world for his job and leaves Alex in the care of a quirky young woman named Jack. But one day, Alex is told his Uncle has died and in the quest to find out more about how it happened, he becomes caught up in Mi6 and the spy game. As a first assignment, he is sent to investigate an American tycoon who has donated a supercomputer to schools around England. Alex soon discovers that there may be much more to this tycoon than meets the eye.For graphic novel adaptations, I always look toward plot continuity and ability to convey in images, rather than words, the story. I feel that the editors and artist did an excellent job in translating Horowitz' action/adventure into pictures. The dialogue was just the right balance - not too much and not too little, and the editors allowed the artist to convey the right amount of images to keep the story moving.I rate this four instead of five stars because Alex seems to have the same "happy go lucky' expression in nearly every panel. Sure, that's his nature but I think facets of that could have been drawn rather than reusing the same expression over and over ad nauseum. In all, I did enjoy this adaptation much better than other YA novels. The artists and authors kept the James Bond like character looking and acting his age.
