Mike Carey has had a pretty solid run for a while now, and to some it's the X-title they look forward to the most, but I think for others, it flies a little under the radar. He doesn't get the hype and attention of other writers like Morrison, Whedon, or even Fraction. But he doesn't get any complaints either. This story is a nice follow up to his first arc, finally featuring a return his Children of the Vault. They are like a Spanish version of the X-men. Except this story is in India. Whatever, it's an excuse to get some character timefor Indra who was a great character idea never really utilized. Anole and Loa are along for the ride but don't get as much attention. Rogue and Magneto are strong lead characters and their dynamic is amazing. Carey is really justifying why it's such a cool idea to have him as an X-man.The Children of the Vault aspect is a little unrelated to their previous appearances. It's a progression for them, though, and not a terrible plot. I wouldn't have minded a few more issues, but it's a concise story that doesn't waste any page space. Clay Mann will be the next Oliver Coipel, in my opinion. He is great. And the Yu covers are pretty sweet too. It's stories like this forming the backbone of the X-franchise. It may not be epic, but it won't disappoint. You're missing out if you miss it.
What makes this collection so effective, even for a non-x reader? The storyline is personal, relatively sensible as far as comics go these days, and it takes its time to reflect on the collision of culture and tradition (in this case a patriarchal Indian cultural backdrop versus a humanist sensualist framework). This rather quiet comic that doesn't boast huge action sequences or villains who overly chew the scenery before they get down to business also manages to play out personality types and tensions (especially Rogue and Magneto giving a taste of the aftermath of their storied history without reviewing it) that the reader will feel.I picked this up out of curiosity and wanting to read a variety and having not been in X-books in quite some time. And I quite enjoyed it.
Children of the Vault and the focus on Indras are arguably the fresher focuses compared to the usual X-Men tales. Rogue gets some actual spotlight but this is more of the Indras' story.
X-Men has had some lean years but the Messiah War/New Hope etc and this has got it back on track....Love it.
