Anyone contemplating the loose and non-dogmatic realm of any New Age regimen would be well served reading this book. This is a very important book and it will speak to you loudly if you let it. If you are embarking on a spiritual adventure with some group or guide, or have already done so, this book will enable you to evaluate the veracity and efficacy of what you might be endeavouring in. If you are looking to truly improve your soul awareness and are willing to do hard honest work, and toil through the proper non dramatic, non gimmick approaches this book will guide you. Rather than waste years and untold sums on scams and blind alleys, this book will give you a legitimate method of evaluating the various approaches you might encounter. I found very useful the list of suggested reading materials he recommends therein as well. Excellent useful advice which is well worth ten times the sales price!
Fans of Manly Hall or the PRS will really enjoy this guide. However, this book will speak volumes to you if you let it. Despite being written over 40 years ago, the wisdom contained within is ageless. This is a genuine guide...a roadmap of do's and dont's for those seeking a spiritual life. More than that, it allows one to delve into their own personality to determine what they really think, about life, death..everything. A fantastic, easy read, that I come back to again and again for insight.
This is one of the best occult books currently available to the earnest seekers of TRUTH, which is teaching a correct spiritual discernment. I call this book simply "The Spiritual Discernment and Discrimination 101." Every aspirant for an occult student ought to begin his or her studies from reading this book. It is a must have and read! It gives a painfully honest analysis of the problems that an occult student is going to face on his or her path. "There is no royal way to Wisdom and Ascension" and Manly Hall explains it well "why." If we were taught the wisdom given in this book in the "first grade" of our spiritual education we, and the world in which we live, would be in much better shape today. This book is a precious jewel given to the Wise who are willing to heed the warning. It will save you many problems and disappointments in your search for TRUTH! The message given in this book is as much in time today as it was more than 70 years ago when the book was first published.
As I became more and more frustrated with Orthodox Christianity, I felt that the best thing for me to do, is to work on fixing myself, and see where that takes me. I made it a point to not judge others as much, to be more patient, and to really just be a nicer person. Since then, I feel like things are making so much more sense to me. I don't feel wrong for questioning certain things regarding my past beliefs. I feel so much more of a connection to myself, and to God, to everything. In this book, M.P. Hall suggests that the first thing any person on a path to spiritual truth must do is look inside themselves and become more virtuous. If the self is not cleansed, then it will not be possible to be on an enlightened path (the middle way, Spiritual Truth, etc.). It made so much sense when I read that. Let me point out that I am not claiming to be remotely close to becoming enlightened, or that I have fixed all of my faults. But I have been having excellent progress on becoming a better person, and since then, have been much more happy. More things make sense, it's easier to change my opinion based on new information, and I feel like I am finding some truth. I have a long ways to go, probably many lifetimes, but that is ok. When I do read scripture, I can usually find a little bit more meaning in the message than just the literal message itself. I enjoy reading more about Christian scripture, Gnostic, Canonical, and many others such as Hindu. If I can find truth in something, then I will read it now. I've gotten rid of my previous religious dogmas, and look forward to learning about other spiritual beliefs.Hall gives examples of the virtues that one should work on, and why they are important for progressing into the next stage of your journey. He also talks about the different ways to spot a fraudulent adept, and what to look for in one to listen to. Of course, he mentions that you should never take anything anyone says as the ultimate Truth. It should be felt and found from within. Any adept that claims to promise enlightenment, is a fraud, and they should only help guide you to keep you on your path. And this is something that has been ringing true to me as well in some instances. There is much more in this little book, and if you are on a journey of finding truth, and you want some good advice, this would be a good buy for you. Even though Manly P. Hall has much to offer, remember that what he says is not your truth. It can only be found from within. He will even tell you this. Happy journeys.Bradley G.
I recommened this book to anyone starting on their spirtual journey. This book informs the student that the journey to wisdon is long and along the way there will be many obsticales. The book informs you on what some of those obsticles may be and it informs you how to evaluate each obsticle. This book offers guideance.
I love Manly P. Hall. I found out after reading some of his books that my grandfather who was a 33 degree Mason used to seek his advice. In the last 3 years I have studied metaphysics under Barbara Y. Martin (excellent) who I learned also knew Mr. Hall. As my grandfather had passed before my birth I'm aware of the light given and that this is no coincidence. Reading Words To The Wise keeps me centered in my belief system and also propels me to stay aware of my words, thoughts, deeds and actions. Sometimes I need to be reminded that it's not in the reading of such great books or even understanding some of the priciples of the mystic life, but it's the way we live every moment of our lives. Hall states that, "We all desire to be better than we are." and "Honesty is the beginning of Wisdom, and that without honesty, no great spiritually can be accomplished." Reading Words To The Wise is one of those books that propels introspection. It's a great book for the metaphysician or any seeker of truth.
This is a book that makes it very easy to understand how to avoid the traps of many who claim they are called to lead. Mr. Hall's style of writing for me was very captivating. For those who find themselves confused as to what is required to live a righteous life, BUY THIS BOOK.
