This is an excellent introduction to health care ethics. Covers theory and principles and ethical decision-making in the first several chapters and the major issues in health care in the remaining chapters. The writers don't bog down in discussing these issues as do some current texts in bioethics. Very readable. Does not have cases so if one uses this for instruction a book with a collection of cases is needed (i.e. Cases Studies in Allied Health Ethics by Veatch and Flack).
This text is a wonderful presentation of how to help prepare to encounter difficult choices and decisions in the health care field. Highly recommended.
I had to buy this book because it was required for one of my college classes. I always look at different resources before buying books because I am a full time nursing student and don't have a lot of extra cash that I can spend if it's not necessary. After checking a couple different places I bought this one because it was the exact book I needed and it was the cheapest. I bought it new and it arrived packaged nicely so I got it in perfect condition. The class was Ethics in Health Care and this book was where we got all of our material from. I learned a lot from this book and that class. Ethics in Health Care is very important to learn for nursing students. Aside from the clinical knowledge ethics are an important part of any health care profession. This book does an excellent job of teaching them.
Easy to read, points illustrated well with real-world examples, though I thought the divisions of some of the ideas/concepts were a bit of a stretch--some things could have been grouped together better. I still use it for reference when talking ethics, though, so I gave it high marks.
The book's strengths are that it is fairly easy to read and has certain design features that highlight and explain the important facts. However, the content of the book has significant political bias, most clearly seen in the chapters about health care legislation and abortion. I was required to read it for my ethics class, but the over-abundance of pro-abortion arguments, analogies, and cartoons was sickening. The book did not give a fair hearing to the pro-life side of the debate.
This is a typical Ethics book, although it is geared to health care. The one we had in nursing school was better, but the target audience for this one is more none nursing, I thought. I needed it for a Heath Care Administrator class and got an "A", so it must have been a good enough book. If you buy it, it is probably for a class, so I'd recommend getting it used. Text books are typically way over priced and this is no exception.
This book got the rating because it talks about the today, today healthcare principles of healthcare. I learned a lot and the book is easy to understand.
Had to buy this for a required class Religious Ethics. Would not have bought it otherwise. It has been an interesting required read and I'm sure very helpful to nurses, medical professionals, hospice etc. I can hardly wait to be finished with the class.
