Truth may be stranger than fiction. It can also be more interesting, as it really happened. A fiction writer would have a difficult time conjuring up the events in this story. Critics might say it is too unbelievable. It couldn't happen that way. Some of the characters sound too quirky. Or, an American Diner couldn't succeed in Paris. But it did thanks to Craig Carlson who didn't know enough to know it couldn't succeed. A wiser, more experienced restaurant owner might have given up. Too many obstacles, French labor laws don't favor entrepreneurs, the French won't stray from their croissants and coffee and milk in a bowl etc. Even George Bush humorously said the French don't have a word for entrepreneur...ha! After reading this book, you will either believe in God (opening this restaurant seemed like a miracle and there was some divine help), believe in destiny (Craig was meant to do this), or realize sometimes you can do impossible things which others would fail at because they didn't believe, trust, risk, and work hard enough. Craig just never gave up.I loved this book. I worked in a restaurant which served great brunches and dinner for seven years. I've also been to Paris and am a Francophile, so the topic was particularly appealing. Craig can see the humor in situations - I laughed aloud at the description of the vulture scenario. Along with the humor, there's even a bit of a love story which is sweet. Warning: you will be salivating for pancakes and some of the egg dishes Craig mentions in here.
