What begins as a two-night camping and kayaking trek in the untamed Alaskan wilderness turns into a test of survival for Cody and her cousin Derek. While their mothers are in Juneau picking up supplies for Yakutat Lodge, the cousins sneak off in an old pickup. The taste of freedom is soon tainted when Cody's kayak is lost on the rising tide, washing away her life vest and precious supplies. With only each other for support, the cousins face hunger and their fears of the unknown region of Southeast Alaska. As an advancing glacier floods the remote fjord, Cody and Derek find themselves facing menacing waves, immense icebergs, and wild animals. A sense that someone is following them adds to the formidable danger.

I realize it was written for young audiences. I read it as a possible book to read to my child on a trip to Alaska. I found the whole story implausible. As if there were not enough implausible things, the most implausible thing is that 2 young teenagers were out lost in the Alaska wilderness and there were not planes or search parties looking for them? These kids were gone 5 or more days, ridiculous. And then the Wildman stuff, I guess it was written for kids and that makes it more exciting. Still this is too much fantasy and too little reality.
Frozen Stiff is a great story about two kids who take off on an unanticipated adventure through the wilderness of an Alaskan fjord. It is written in such a way that the reader can feel the cold air, hear the breaking of the glacial ice and see the mountains and trees. A fun story that keeps you reading until the last chapter is finished. I liked the way the author gave such vivid mental images of the scenery through the character's eyes. The author obviously knows children because of the typical way the two main characters interact and speak with each other, they're classic! Even as an adult, I enjoyed the book, but I'm sure young readers will even more.
Frozen Stiff by Sherry Shahan is about survival and overcoming challenges. The novel is about two cousins who go on an adventure but encounter mother nature at its worst and most surprising. Cody, the teen protagonist, wants to go on one more camping trip before her summer in Alaska is over and she has to go back to school in California. The plan was for Cody and her younger cousin Derek to go out on a fjord to camp and kayak for two nights before their parents returned from a supply run to Juneau. The kids make it to the fjord but all plans go wrongly from there. Weather and flooding put the two in perilous conditions but the biggest danger facing them may be someone following them in the woods. Cody and Derek must fight their fears head on and work together to save themselves.I recommend this adventure novel. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness and learning about glaciers. In addition to battling the elements, Shahan keeps the story interesting by adding suspense, mystery and twists.

This is a wonderful book it's really interesting and you'll always wonder what's happening next. This is a wonderful story you'll love it.
The setting takes place between Yukatat and juneau Alaska at least in the late 1980's. A girl named Cody travels with her cousin Derek to Juneau, Alaska from Yukatat, Alaska. To find their mothers who are shopping for supplies traveling by kayak. Trying to beat the rising current Cody loses her kayak in the current that had all their supplies that was needed. Cody gets a fever in which she almost dies but thanks to Derek she was calmed down. Cody goes blind from the glare of the sun off the salt water. They almost get to the city but, were caught in a storm. Imagery was used in this story because it creates pictures in the mind of the reader. I think that this is a very good and interesting book. When I started to read it I couldn't blink my eyes. I like the character Derek because it was cool how he took care of her cousin.

A believable story, I found myself in the wilds along with the strong-willed cousins. This book of adventure equals in excellence with Gary Paulson's HATCHET.
15 year old Cody and her 12 year old cousin think that they are sneaking off for a carefree 2-day camping and Kayak trip in glacier/fjord wilderness in Southwest Alaska, while their mothers are in Juneau bueing supplies. The trip soon turns into a terrifing week when the Hubbard Glacier "serges" blocking the Fjord, the water leval rises and washes Codyes kayak away and a lot of their supplies. Soon they are soaking wet, starving , and tired. The fun two night trip becomes a fight for servivle, the're fighting huge glaciers, waves, and the worst par is they think they are being followed!
