If you are a boy who really likes baseball you would like it. I'm not really a fan, so the play by play of some of the games, didn't interest me. However I was reading it as a possible novel to use in my 4th grade classroom. It would be good for a baseball fan!
The Thunderballs don't have a baseball coach. Unless someone steps up to the plate and manages this team, the boys won't be able to play baseball. And what a surprise when Nick's mom volunteers to be the new coach. And what a surprise when the boys play The Tornadoes, an arch rival, and win the pennant. That's what I like, a life full of surprises.Again, Matt Christopher, shares his love for baseball, with all the kids in this heart-warming, exciting, baseball story that talks about friendships and relationships. My grandson loves these stories, I strongly recommend that every kid read them, I give it five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of THE UNKNOWN BASEBALL PLAYER.
My 7 year old son is an avid reader. He loves many books but most of all, books by Matt Christopher. This book started it all. It is a heart-warming story which keeps a child's interest due to the baseball, but is really about a mother and son relationship. I stongly recommend this book!
The Year Mom Won the Pennant is one of my favorite Matt Christopher books, I have read it at least twice. The main characters in this book, Nick Vassey and his Mom, are both funny. This is a great story with plenty of humor and action.
Nick and the the Thunderballs can't find a coach for their baseball team so who else offers for the job but NICK'S MOM. Nobody likes the idea at first, but when the team beats the Tornadoes,(Their arch rival) to win the pennant. An extraordinary book that teaches you lessons in friendship as well as baseball.

Nick and the rest of the team are the main characters in the book. The minor characters are the other teams that they play and the friends and family of the players on Nick's baseball team. Nick's baseball team is not very good. This year, they don't have a coach Nick's mom decides to become the coach. The whole team thinks that their team will do even worse. This book really takes place in the 1980's in Nick's town. But could take place anytime and anywhere as long as there is faith, determination and baseball.
When Nick Vassey's mom starts coaching the Thunderballs, he is mortified. No-one has heard of a female coach! But when the Thunderballs start winning games, and finally the pennant, Nick Knows it was a good idea after all.
