I like simplicity when it comes to identification guides. This one is direct and easy to use (as its title implies). It's not intimidating or so comprehensive that it scares wannabe naturalists away (which is a good thing). I only wish I had found this guide years ago -- when I actually lived in Arizona!

So easy, a child can do it. In fact, on many of our hikes, we give this book to one of the children and let them take responsibility for telling us what we are seeing. We're an Arizona family. Even a kindergarten-age child can interpret the book.The simple line drawings really work.

I like these little paper field guides. I have a few of them. They are easy to carry in a pack. I think a hike is much more meaningful when one can identify what one sees. I have found these guides to be accurate and usefull. They cover the topics at a reasonable level of precision. I'd like one on geology; is that a fold and thrust feature or a basin and range escarpment?

Constantly saying things like, "If the cactus you're viewing has (fill in the blank), turn to page xx. If it doesn't, turn to page x." What the?????? Not even a kid would like this. It was supposed to be an Xmas gift, but it's going back asap.
