Convenient to carry around in the woods, but lacks enough detail to be of much use in differentiating similar looking mushrooms. The illustrations are cartoons, not photographs, except for the front page. The pictures of the poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms look VERY similar and I would not feel confident using this as a guide to deciding what's safe to eat! I think it's useful for a general categorization.

I would not call this a pocket guide because it is to long and being laminated, which is a good thing, it is not foldable. It is however a useful and portable field guide that will fit in a daypack or backpack when you are out on a hike or backpacking or camping. It contains 77 lifelike illustrations of both edible and poisonous mushrooms and a general information and tip page. The illustrations are of good quality and if you lookup the photographs of each mushroom on Google or Bing you will be able to recognize the illustration as the specific mushroom in the photo. Overall it is 4 out of 5 stars because it is not foldable down to the level of fitting in a pant or shirt pocket, but I would feel confident having studied the mushrooms on the pamphlet thoroughly using the pamphlet as a basis for my research to use this as a field guide in identifying the edible mushrooms on the pamphlet in the wild. Worth the price in my opinion.

First off, this is by no means a fully unabridged guide to mushrooms. For that you will need to get a Peterson Guide. However, if you do have a Peterson Guide at home, then read it and just carry this field guide as a reminder. The pictures are actually drawings, but they are very good. Most of them picture open and closed mushrooms. It even has a few poisonous mushrooms listed so you don't eat them.Lamination is nice, plus the size is really good for putting in a backpack or large fanny pack.Overall, get a good resource like Peterson for home. Study it well, but don't bring it with you. It takes up way too much room. Bring these small field guides for easy reference.

Was looking for something more about common fungi you find in the woods, not the very "showy" fungi that you rarely see. This one seems to focus on the latter. Will still be bringing it on my hikes but I don't think it'll be one that I'll be referring to very often.

This has been helpful with our nature studies. (We homeschool, ala Charlotte Mason). My 5yo son loves it! I didn't realize he was reading it on his own until we were walking in the woods recently and spotted some mushrooms. I asked our friend to take a pic of the mushrooms with her phone so we could identify them at home, since we didn't have the guide with us. My son piped up and said "I already know what they are! They're turkey tails!" She took the pic and we looked them up at home. Sure enough, that's what they were! I'm sure the guide is not comprehensive, since it has limited space. But the pictures seem great and the concise descriptions are helpful. It's perfect for kids: colorful pics, good variety of species, not too overwhelmingly long (like a guide book), good size for small hands. It's really added to our homeschool nature studies.

Ive been hunting moral and other mushrooms in Ohio 32 years. And I was amazed at all of the edible mushrooms.I've been missing several of them I've seen yearly but didn't know they were ok to eat.im very much looking forward to spring.ill tear them up this year.thanks another happy customer.

I have one of these guides that I bought so I could know what various mushrooms look like for reference in painting, drawing & sketching for my watercolor paintings. I have used it for several years and have found it to be a great reference on how different ones look that I can adapt for usage in my paintings using watercolor pencils.

I thought this pamphlet would have had real pictures by the way the cover looks but it does not. It's not a bad little booklet it's just not great.
