Now in an updated second edition, Wildflowers of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region is a full-color field guide packed with wildflower listings cover to cover. Each listing features a color photograph of the wildflower, and a brief information block concerning its size, description, fruit, status, a county graph of its geographic distribution in Wisconsin, and more. More than 1,100 species from 459 genera in 100 families of wildflower are covered in this excellent, user-friendly resource catalog.
A boon to all field botanists, both amateur and professional, this guide is essential when botanizing in the Upper Midwest. In Wisconsin, the range maps are so helpful in guiding one to the correct identification. And with so many species covered, it's hard to find something not covered by this book.
Great book! Very educational, detailed information, and a must have if in any type of plant taxonomy class (especially if you're a UWSP student). This book will work well for students, and people who have an interest in learning more about Wisconsin's plants. The book is well thought out and very informative. Includes common and scientific names, and where the plant can be found. The pictures are a little small, but they have to be due to the extensive list of plants included.
I am going to get another book to help me as a rank amateur. This book is good if you know plants, but I haven't figured out how to count the "parts" of a flower yet after cruising the pages for an hour, and number of parts is critical to using the ID method. Being complete is its best attribute. Pictures are small. Guess I need the Flowers for Dummies version. Big pictures with ID by color would be a better way for me to get started.
For Beginners: this book takes you through the basis of how to start identifying flowers, and provides detailed pictures of each flower. It also provides descriptions for different life stages. For the more Advanced: It has an extremely helpful index and groups similar flowers together. So I find that by searching for a flower I know is similar I can quickly find the one I'm looking for.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found this book easy to use. If you start out by identifying the number of petals, it will usually narrow down the search. Found it to be very helpful in identifying wildflowers in northern Wisconsin
This is the best wild flower book I have found for Wisconsin. It is clearly user friendly and holds your interest. The layout of the book describes the various types of areas found hear and therefore the plants that are likely to be in each of these areas. The flower description, pictures, and area where the plants can be found is very easy to follow and allows you to get more involved with the scientific aspects of these plants if you desire, making it likely to remember them better. All the photos are quite clear and helpful.
Great reference book for wildflowers in the Great Lakes region, not just Wisconsin. Good color photographs of the flowers up close. Good addition when used with Peterson's Wildflower guide. They both cover a large amount of the wildflowers in this region.
